- Mazatlán have not won in their last five Clausura games, losing three of them.
- Tigres scored 35 goals and conceded 16 during the Clausura, finishing top of the table and securing a top seed for the Liguilla.
- Tigres have dominated the Liga MX head-to-head record since Mazatlán’s arrival, winning most encounters, but the last two games have been much closer.
Tigres on a mission in Gignac’s farewell
This is a clash of two contrasting styles in which a well-organised, possession-based team takes on a compact, defensive-minded opponent.
Guido Pizarro is Tigres' head coach and former club captain. He has built a team that is balanced and organised, with the ability to control the tempo of games through a patient style of play. They move the ball wide to open up central spaces, while midfield overloads and high pressing make them dangerous in attack.
It remains to be seen if Tigres can maintain the form that saw them dominate the Clausura regular season through the Liguilla, but they certainly seem ready to go on Saturday. They have been a little wobbly recently, losing two and drawing two of their last five in all competitions, but the 4-1 home win over Guadalajara last weekend showed what they are capable of.
André-Pierre Gignac will be at the centre of the action as he bids an emotional farewell to Tigres and his home fans at the Estadio Universitario. The Frenchman has been his team’s talisman for several years, but Juan Brunetta and Joaquín Pereira have emerged as his creative lieutenants this year, supplying goals and playing key roles in the attack.
Mazatlán need a miracle to make the Liguilla
Mazatlán, on the other hand, are at the other end of the spectrum. They have not won in five Clausura matches, losing three of them. They conceded 29 goals in the entire campaign, finishing on 14 points and near the bottom of the table.
Sergio Bueno, who has done a good job since taking over in January 2026, has had to manage an off-pitch situation while trying to organise a compact defence and direct counter-attacking game plan. His recent suspension for sideline behaviour has disrupted his communication with players.
Brian Rubio is Mazatlán’s focal point in attack, providing crucial goals. They have little more than a low block to offer and hope that the wings of Mauro Laínez and Leo Suárez can create a few chances and make the most of set pieces.
Favourite must win
There is no getting around the fact that Tigres are overwhelming favourites at 1.19 to win this match. They are in much better form, have more to play for and will be boosted by Gignac’s emotional send-off. It is almost impossible to see how Mazatlán get a draw unless they can keep it tight and strike on a counter-attack.
However, the value is not on the win market and we are taking over 2.5 goals at 1.38 instead. Tigres’ attacking style and superior quality should see them score a couple of goals, but Mazatlán can’t be trusted to keep them out. This should be a lively game with a big crowd behind Tigres as they look to secure a win ahead of the Liguilla, while Mazatlán, with nothing but pride to play for, can at least spoil the party.
