- Essendon have won two of the last three head-to-head meetings with Springvale White Eagles (VPL2) with no draws in that sequence.
- Essendon Royals are third in the VPL2 on 24 points from 14 matches, Springvale White Eagles are seventh on 17-18 points.
- Essendon Royals have scored ten times in their last three home games, thumping Nunawading 5-1 and Moreland 3-1.
High-scoring clash likely in Melbourne derby
With a Melbourne derby and two of the most in-form teams in the Victoria Premier League 2 2026 meeting on Friday, plenty of goals are expected at Cross Keys Reserve.
Essendon Royals' record of ten goals scored in their last three home matches is notable.
Mick Ferrante's men are currently third and on 24 points from 14, compared to Springvale White Eagles' 17-18 from the same number of games. But they have struggled at times at the back, losing 1-0 at Goulburn Valley Suns and Keilor Park within the last couple of weeks.
But Royals are strong at home, with their 5-1 thumping of Nunawading and 3-1 win over Moreland demonstrating their quality going forward.
Turnovers and transitions should produce chances for both sides
Ferrante has put his stamp on this team, with a high front-line press and lots of proactive, possession-based football. They like to play wide and press the opponent from the midfield up, with lots of high, short passes and movement off the ball to turn opponents over and score quickly.
Springvale White Eagles are the exact opposite, playing with a defence-first, counter-attacking philosophy where they sit deep and compact and try to stay in the game until they can pounce in transition or from a set-piece.
That should make for a bit of a chess match on Friday night, but one that should open up plenty of space for both teams to play on after turnovers, so we are likely to see goals at both ends of the field.
Essendon have the edge
Both teams to score is 1.51 here, with the bookies clearly expecting plenty of opportunities for both to register. But the odds on Essendon to win this one are very short at 1.63 while Springvale are 4.26 underdogs.
That's largely due to Essendon being such a force on their own patch while Springvale come in off the back of consecutive league defeats. Prior to that, however, Andrew Skledar's men had won three straight in a streak of typical form for them - up and down.
Essendon's recent form should see them edge a tight contest like this and we will go with a home win as the main selection, but both sides will get chances according to our correct score prediction.
Jordan Adeyemi to score
Our selection in the anytime scorer market is the VPL2 Golden Boot winner Jordan Adeyemi, who has tallied 7 - 9 goals this season. He is the focal point of their attack with Marcus Kotronis the creative link that helps him and the rest of the forward line to unlock defences.
Springvale will look to Daniel Bennett, a proven penalty-taker and a veteran leader in the side, to find the net. Veteran Goran Zoric has also provided a handful of goals and Josh Millar provides an aerial threat, while Dean Clarke adds experience and the odd goal to the side with Bradley Norton providing a solid backline to work from.
