- NTS won 5-1 and ISR won 3-2 in their last two contests in April 2025 and August 2024
- Illawarra Stingrays (ISR) have the worst record in the NPL NSW this season with 10 points from 14 games, a -11 goal difference and no wins in their last five matches
- Northern Tigers (NTS) have the seventh best record in the NSW NPL with 19 points from 14 matches and a +2 goal difference, winning two and losing three of their last five outings
Northern Tigers are the most likely to finish in the top half
These two sides have split the spoils in 17 NPL head-to-head contests with each side taking seven wins and three draws, so Sunday's NPL clash is a tough one to call. Northern Tigers are rightful favourites at 1.43 to take all three points against the hosts, who are 5.86 underdogs with a draw priced at 4.33.
Fin Geraghty's side are a compact, possession-based football team that are tactically versatile and capable of playing a good football game. They keep the ball well, press their opponents and can be explosive going forward when their midfield runners and front two are in form - as they were when putting four goals past APIA last time out.
The Tigers do not have a star striker to rely on, instead, scoring 1.67 goals per NPL game with a collective effort that has seen squad players pop up with goals regularly. Where Northern Tigers are vulnerable is in defence and they have shown that they are far from impenetrable against the better pressing teams in this division.
Stingrays have sting in their tail
Steve Gordon's Illawarra side are a different beast altogether and have enjoyed success when they have been able to frustrate their opponents and get on the front foot with their pace and directness in transition. The home side will look to be structured and disciplined in defence and will use their set-piece routine to create chances.
Michelle Carney remains their talisman, providing leadership and a constant threat from dead-ball situations. She has scored free-kicks.
Sarina Bolden will bring pace and a clinical finish to any Stingrays side she features in, having scored multiple goals on two occasions in this campaign. And Sasha Grove can provide the quality to unlock defences from midfield.
Expect goals in this NPL clash
The difference in these two teams styles should see NTS attempt to dictate the game while ISR look to frustrate their play. The value is likely to be in goals here, particularly if Illawarra can get their set-piece game working with regularity.
Therefore, the overs is our main selection and we're taking Over 2.5 goals at 1.54 with both teams to score at 1.67 as our secondary wager.
Despite their poor record and the fact that they are 5.86 to win this game, we think Illawarra will keep this tight enough to spring a surprise. NTS will win the majority of the possession and territory, but ISR have the sting to get a shot on goal or two, while we cannot foresee them blowing the hosts away.
