Spirit and Rangers in must-win clash
Two relegation-haunted clubs face off in the New South Wales Women's NPL on Saturday when last-place NWS Koalas Spirit host Western City Rangers in a high-stakes relegation six-pointer.
Spirit, who will be led by interim head coach Jai Cross this weekend, have conceded 50 goals in 14 games and looked to be in free-fall, but have won consecutive league games in late May and early June to stop the rot. The Spirit are still fragile at the back, however, and Rangers' superior head-to-head record and occasional attacking sparks may see them secure the win they need to escape the drop zone.
Cross, a pragmatic coach, has deployed a compact, organised structure that has stopped the flow of heavy defeats that saw the Spirit concede around 50 goals in 14 matches. Ella Abdul Massih has been a spark in the final third in Spirit's two wins, while Skye Halmarick offers a long-range threat and was instrumental in the Koalas' recent 1 - 0 away win over Sydney Olympic.
This clash is a 'must-win' for both clubs and should be a scrappy affair with goals likely, so the Over 2.5 goals market of 1.37 looks the best way to go on the 90 minutes. While Spirit have been in resurgence, a narrow Rangers win or 1 - 1 draw makes the most sense from a draw no bet perspective because of the visitors' superior head-to-head and greater attacking firepower.
Rangers are faster and more direct
Spirit have had a tough season and look to build from the back when they have the ball, but their slow tempo and vulnerability to the press has seen them punished by some of the league's more aggressive teams. Rangers are one of those teams - Milan Jovanovic's side are high-risk, high-reward, playing fast and loose in the attacking third and often getting caught out at the other end.
Rangers have conceded a ton of goals in their last five games, which they have lost, but they do pose a threat going forward with Trista Seara, who scored a brace and a brilliant long-range goal in their 5-1 win over Spirit in March, and Jakeelie Hook both capable of popping up with a goal. Trudy Camilleri is a good passer and gets the ball into wide areas where Rangers' full-backs overlap and provide service to the likes of Seara and Hook. Leena Khamis is a veteran presence up front and Renée Krstanovska is a reliable goalkeeper on her day.
Rangers have not looked themselves in recent weeks and appear to have lost their swagger after starting the season with a flurry of attacking flair. Spirit are the team in the better form with two consecutive wins in the league, but the absence of suspended captain Erin Pridmore is a massive blow. She is a great organiser at the heart of the defence and her leadership and experience will be sorely missed. The Spirit are the favourites at 1.97, but the visitors are 3.04 and we feel they are the better bet on double chance because of their head-to-head superiority and the fact that weather may play a part with showers and a slick surface benefitting their direct, fast-paced style.
Our prediction of a narrow Rangers win is only a narrow preference over the 1 - 1 draw, however, because Spirit will be up for this game, have the home advantage and have found the right formula for success over the past two weeks. The game could be decided on a moment of brilliance from Rangers' Seara or Spirit's Halmarick, but our preference is for the away side because of the way the game will be played by the two clubs.
