Bulls have the bite and bite to win this big game
Bulls Academy have a bit more of everything than Macarthur Rams heading into this game, but that doesn't mean the underdogs can't find a way to get a result at Lynwood Park on Sunday. Bulls sit 2nd in the NPL NSW Women after 14 rounds with 33 points, three shy of the leaders, while the Rams are eighth on 18 points and hoping to climb into finals contention.
Bulls are the class favourites for this because they are the league's form side, have a better league position and are shorter in the odds. But Macarthur have a good record against Bulls and have some real momentum at the moment, so it's going to be interesting to see how Marty Garces' side copes with this particular clash of styles.
Garces' Bulls are an extremely structured and high-tempo side that set the early pace with their high-press, wide attacking play and clinical finishing. Tamires De Souza and Jasmine Meli provide the quality in the wide areas and Bulls have one of the highest goals-for tallies in the comp after 14 rounds, but have also conceded few goals thanks to a compact and efficient defensive unit.
Rams’ momentum and momentum could see them take a set-piece
Victoria Guzman has built a team that is more transitional in nature, preferring to grow into games with their fresh legs and energy of their second-half substitutes. The Rams' last three games have shown a resurgence in goals scored, while the one they conceded at Manly last week suggests they can leak goals against top opposition.
Rams' record against Bulls Academy over the last three years suggests they have a chance to take something from this matchup, having won five of the previous eight meetings in all competitions. But Bulls have won two of the last three, so we'll go with the form team to make it three wins in a row.
The Over 2.5 goals market is a bit short at 1.36 considering the average number of goals these two sides have managed against each other in recent times, but we can't go against it because of the attacking profile of each team. Macarthur always score goals when they get their forward the ball, while Bulls will create a load of chances in the first half.
Top players on each side can make a difference
Arna Hogarth-Scott is becoming Bulls' super sub, coming off the bench to score late winners. Tegan Bertolissio is doing much the same for Macarthur, heading the equaliser at Manly and generally giving the team a lift when she is on the pitch.
We like the Bulls to get the win here because of their form, their league position and the odds. But it is a 1.39 favourite to go the distance, so there is scope to make this game interesting if Macarthur can keep it tight. And we wouldn't put it past the Rams to do so, given their momentum and set-piece threat, so a tight game is in the forecast with Bulls probably edging it.
