- Illawarra Stingrays are in the lower half in NPL New South Wales Women's.
- UNSW are mid-table, having won three consecutive league games in May, but lost their last two away.
UNSW should have a clear plan for Illawarra
Two very different footballing identities will meet on Sunday when Illawarra Stingrays and University of New South Wales face off at Lakelands Oval in what should be a tight and competitive contest.
UNSW boss Zoran Naumovski has brought a style of possession-based, patient build-up play to the team in his first season at the club, with a preference for either a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 shape. He has some talented and in-form attackers, including Poppy Channing, who is a key playmaker.
UNSW will look to dominate possession and control the tempo of this game against an Illawarra side who will sit deep, defend in numbers and try to spring quick counter-attacks. Their transition play is a work in progress, with Chloe Middleton leading a compact midfield and back four, and her experience and leadership have been vital while the club integrates new signings like Kiara Rochaix, who will offer attacking quality and a bit of a spark in transition.
Stingrays’ home form has not provided any relief
Illawarra have been struggling in the bottom half of the table after a transitional season. They have lost four of their last five league games, scoring only two goals in that run. Their home record offers little respite, keeping just one clean sheet in the last five.
UNSW are in the mid-to-upper reaches of the NPL NSW Women's table with 19-22 points and have been more consistent than Illawarra, although they have lost their past two away games. A 1-0 home win over Stingrays in March 2026 has set a precedent for a potential shift in momentum in this fixture, but the odds on both teams to score - no at 1.4 are very low and reflect the tight, defensive nature of this fixture.
Possession vs transition
The odds on over 2.5 goals at 1.41 are similarly low, given Illawarra are not good enough to break UNSW down and UNSW have a strong goal tally across the season. Under 2.5 is equally low at 2.52, which is more appropriate but a draw is offered at 8.6, which is the most likely outcome given UNSW's consistent form and Illawarra's poor form in the league.
A 1-1 draw is also likely, although a 1-0 win for either side is equally probable. The weather should be cool and clear for this game, ideal conditions for UNSW's patient style of football, but Illawarra have enough to be a threat on set pieces and counter-attack.
Steve Gordon is a pragmatist and has been emphasising a defense-first approach while bringing through young talent alongside experienced leaders like Aileen Williams, his overseas signing who can provide attacking quality and is a threat on corners and free kicks.
