- APIA Leichhardt Tigers are inside the top four with 28 points from 14 games and have a better chance than Macarthur of making the finals.
- Macarthur Rams are eighth on the table with 18 points from 14 matches and need a win to have any chance of pushing into the top six.
Two similar teams with different approaches to the season
APIA Leichhardt Tigers are favourites to beat Macarthur Rams (W) on Sunday, and the odds on that happening are much shorter than the hosts' price of 4.26. The draw is also short at 4.2 and could well be a better option if you believe this game could be a tight match, which the head-to-head record suggests APIA have the edge.
These two clubs have taken slightly different approaches to the 2026 campaign, with APIA set up to retain their Sapphire Cup crown and have a good chance of making the NPL New South Wales Women finals as the result of continuity and depth in their squad. Victoria Guzman's young Macarthur side appear to have been built to be a force in 2027 and beyond as a youth development project, but her team's flair and verve have got them into a position where they can make a play for the finals if they win all their remaining games.
The hosts have been erratic, with two wins and three defeats in their last five NPL games, but they did take the scalp of Northern Tigers at home earlier this year and will look to repeat the dose on Sunday. Macarthur have a real forward threat in the shape of Tea Mucenski, who can grab a goal when things aren't going well for the home side, but they remain fragile at the back with goalkeeper Sofia Fante producing the saves of her life for the past couple of months - until she was substituted due to injury last weekend.
Discipline and tempo control can tip the balance for APIA
APIA's recent form has been impressive, the only blip being their failure to sustain a midfield control and finish off a lacklustre Northern Tigers last weekend. Brad Attard's team have the engine room to dictate the tempo of this contest, with Estelle Fragale linking up the defensive line to their wide and forward players and Maya Lobo adding aerial presence and late-game bite.
Our selection of APIA to win is based on the bookmakers' over-reaction to the last result between these clubs when the Tigers were at 1.59. The Tigers have the structure and stability to cancel out Macarthur's manic energy and could run away with this if the Rams are not fully recovered from their 5-0 mauling by Bulls FC Academy.
Ashlie Letta and Talia Kapetanellis give APIA a real spark up front and in the wide areas where they can get into the byline and cut the ball back or put in dangerous balls. Macarthur's Sakura Nojima is the team's heartbeat in midfield and will get them up and running on the counter-attack if the Tigers sit back. Back the visitors to come away with a comfortable win, but Macarthur will give it a go and the game should have enough goalmouth action to keep fans entertained.
