NPL Queensland relegation 'six-pointer' awaits
Magic United TFA and Brisbane Roar Youth go head-to-head in a clash of NPL Queensland teams currently embroiled in the relegation scrap on Saturday. The hosts are currently eleventh on seven points, just above 12th-placed Roar Youth, who are on six points after the same number of games played.
Magic United have a superior all-time head-to-head record with one win in one meeting, but they did win away to Roar Youth 1 - 0 in NPL Queensland in March 2026. They will be desperate to build on that result with home support this time around, but will find it tough against a Roar Youth team.
The hosts have been in poor form, conceding 18 goals in their last five games and scoring six. They are defensively vulnerable in all positions and Brett Budwee's pragmatic setup, which has seen them play a compact, defensive setup and look to transition quickly, has failed to hold up in 2026.
Roar’s ‘A-League’ style is a work in progress
Brisbane Roar Youth have also been in dismal form recently, losing their last five NPL Queensland matches, shipping 17 goals and conceding at least three in four of them. Borja Souto's team has a solid pedigree in youth development and has played a flowing, passing game with many of the characteristics of the A-League team's build from the back, possession-based approach.
Magic United have the edge in psychological terms due to their March win away to Brisbane, but Magic United are marginally better on paper, and the odds of 2.0 for the favourites in this contest represents little value. Magic United are 2.9 and the draw is 3.6 in this match, which I feel will be close and could go either way with either team likely to need the points to escape the relegation zone.
Both teams capable of scoring
With both teams prone to conceding, the bookies are making 'Both teams to score' at a short 1.3 and I'll look to an alternative market for value. 'Over 2.5 goals' is also 1.3 and I'm happy to take those odds given that both of these teams have been conceding three or more in recent weeks.
Mason Cross is the target man for Magic United, starting most attacks and proving to be a physical presence up top, while Harry Lane and Henry Aitken have both chipped in with important goals this season. Youthful energy is their strength, but they need to be more consistent in the final third.
For Brisbane, Sam Klein and Emmett Shaw provide the drive from deep while Tomislav Bilic in goal could be a difference maker if the visitors are to keep a clean sheet. They will look to overload with Quinn MacNicol operating from advanced positions and playing off the forwards when on the ball.
An end-to-end affair expected
These two teams are clearly mismatched in terms of playing style, with Roar Youth trying to control the tempo and Magic United playing off the break. I'm expecting an open game where both sides will have opportunities to win and Roar Youth will need a clean sheet from Bilic to have a chance of winning the game.
