Portugal to get off the mark in Group K
Portugal are expected to beat Uzbekistan in Houston on Tuesday in a match that sees the Central Asians make their FIFA World Cup finals debut in Group K. Portugal lack the sharpness and killer instinct they will need to progress to the second round of the tournament in the States, but they should be able to handle Uzbekistan, who look a little out of their depth in the United States.
Roberto Martinez's men started their Group K campaign with a 1-1 draw against DR Congo in a tough opener, but they didn't look convincing in that clash and their performance against Nigeria, a 2-1 friendly win, was only a little better. Martinez is known for his flexibility and willingness to adapt to the opposition, but Portugal have been lining up in either a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 system in recent games, focusing on midfield domination, full-backs pushing up, and forward rotation in the front three.
Uzbekistan, on the other hand, will set up in a 3-4-2-1 formation, looking to remain compact in a deep block, keep their lines disciplined and hit on the counter attack with pace in the wide areas. Fabio Cannavaro's team are a work in progress and they have impressed since the former Juventus legend took over in October 2025, but they look a level below the majority of the teams in the tournament and their 3-1 opening defeat to Colombia showed their defensive vulnerabilities.
Portugal's class should tell
Portugal are 1.18 favourites with the bookmakers and rightly so, Uzbekistan are big minnows in comparison and it's difficult to see them grabbing a result in their first-ever FIFA World Cup appearance. Uzbekistan have lost three consecutive matches coming into this fixture, winning just two of their last five in all competitions.
Joao Neves is Group K's top scorer with one goal in one match and his presence could be decisive on Tuesday, while the creativity of Pedro Neto, who registered one assist in Portugal's Group K opener, will also be vital. Uzbekistan's Abbosbek Fayzullayev, who also has one goal in the Group K, can be a threat and will give the group stage's whipping boys some hope of breaking through.
Portugal's extra class and better match fitness should tell in Houston, however, and a win to nil for the European side is the main bet, with 'Both teams to score - No' at 1.61. Martinez's side should dominate possession and force the action in the first half before Uzbekistan begin to press more in the second half.
