Crucial clash in Guadalajara
Uruguay and Spain are level on one point apiece after their opening games in FIFA World Cup Group H 2026, although La Celeste are ahead on goal difference ahead of Saturday's critical clash at Guadalajara Stadium.
La Roja are the odds-on favourites to win this match at 1.55, but Marcelo Bielsa's Uruguay are 6.0 to cause an upset that would put them well in control of the group.
The two sides still differ greatly in the style of football they play, so the spoils will go to whoever can impose their game plan best on Saturday.
Spain can edge a tight encounter
Spain beat Peru 3-1 in a friendly just before the World Cup and followed that up with a disappointing 0-0 draw with Cape Verde in their opening game. Luis de la Fuente's side are a disciplined unit with an excellent balance of quality and versatility and are always capable of grinding out a result, which they may have to do against Uruguay.
Rodri is the lynchpin of a Spanish midfield, which is disciplined and can control the tempo with short, sharp passing triangles. Lamine Yamal offers a real threat on the right flank with his direct play and ability to break lines with his dribbling ability, but this is a measured, possession-based approach that can stifle opponents.
Bielsa's Uruguay are arguably the most aggressive team in the World Cup with their front-foot pressing, high tempo and desire to play on the front foot. They need to be on the attack because they lack the quality in the final third to make teams pay from deep.
La Celeste lack the players to hurt Spain
Federico Valverde is a relentless energy source in midfield, while Ronald Araújo provides a physical and disciplined presence at the back that will be important against Spain's intricately-crafted attacks. The likes of Maximiliano Araujo, who has one goal in the current World Cup group stage, are Uruguay's most likely threat going forward.
Oyarzabal, on the other hand, has scored three of Spain's last six goals in their previous five matches, making the Real Sociedad man an obvious goal threat.
La Roja are unbeaten in five and have shown themselves to be a very tough nut to crack. Spain should have enough quality to edge this tactical battle, although Uruguay will not make it easy and could nick a result from nowhere, so under 2.5 goals at 1.97 is also appealing.
