- Cape Verde will arrive in Houston in good form after winning three, drawing one and losing one of their last five matches in all competitions.
- Saudi Arabia's recent form reads one win, two draws and two defeats in their last five games in all competitions.
- The home side held Spain to a 0-0 draw away from home in their FIFA World Cup, Group H 2026 opener just four days ago.
Saudi Arabia look to take the lead in Group H
Cape Verde will need to deliver another statement performance in Houston to further their chances of progressing to the second round of a FIFA World Cup for the first time in their history.
The Blue Sharks, ranked 107th in the world, held Group H favourites Spain to a goalless draw away from home in their opener.
Saudi Arabia sit 2nd in the group with Cape Verde fourth by virtue of goal difference.
The two nations will go head-to-head at Houston Stadium in a fixture that will be very difficult to predict, with neither nation ever meeting before.
Donis has changed Saudi Arabia's system
Saudi Arabia have drawn their last two games, and both of those matches are indicative of the progress Georgios Donis has made during his tenure. Appointed in April 2026, Donis has instilled a much higher-tempo, more aggressive pressing style on Saudi Arabia. They aim to be the more dominant side on the pitch, with high triggers for pressing, which will allow them to attempt to win the ball back in their half and attack vertically. This style is a departure from Cape Verde, who have a more conservative, compact system. Bubista, who has managed the home sides since January 2020, likes to keep the team compact, especially in the midfield, and look to play on the counter with their wide players.
Cape Verde can make life difficult for Saudi Arabia
After a 3-0 win over Serbia in their first of two Friendly International Matches 2026, Cape Verde put in another decent performance against Bermuda, winning by the same score. They can hold their own against higher-ranked nations, as their result against Spain proved, and could spring a surprise in the group.
Their collective strength is their defensive organisation and ability to punish turnovers. If Saudi Arabia press high up the field, Cape Verde can use their ball-playing midfield pivot and wide players to play fast-paced counter attacks.
The Saudis will need to be careful, however. They beat Puerto Rico 3-0 away from home and held Senegal to a 0-0 away from home in their final two friendlies ahead of the World Cup. Their opener against Uruguay, a match in which they held Uruguay to a 1-1 home draw, also saw the Green Falcons' defensive resolve, but they lacked the cutting edge to win.
Go with the draw, or a narrow Saudi win
We think that Cape Verde can hold Saudi Arabia to a stalemate at NRG Stadium, but if the draw is too short for you, we will take a Saudi win as a 2nd pick in the result market. With Saudi Arabia winning one, drawing one and losing two of their last four away from home, we don't believe this will be a runaway victory for Donis' men.
Al Amri is the biggest goal threat for Saudi Arabia, having scored Saudi Arabia's only goal in their opening game. Al-Hamdan, who has two of their last five goals, is the form forward for the favourites though, so we're going with him in the anytime goalscorer market.
Both teams are more defensively adept, so we will chance the BTTS-No bet in this clash at a shade of odds-on.
