- Gladbach have failed to win any of their last three away fixtures against Köln.
- Köln have not lost either of their home games in the Bundesliga 2026/2027 so far (W1, D1).
- Köln have scored 2.00 goals per game and conceded 1.50 goals per game at home in the Bundesliga 2026/2027.
Koln can keep their momentum going
Rene Wagner's 1. FC Köln are the slight favourites for Sunday's Lower-Rhine derby at the RheinEnergieSTADION as the home side come into the game unbeaten in two at home in the Bundesliga 2026/2027 (W1, D1).
It's a bit tight at the bottom of the table for Köln, who sit 13th with four points from their first four matches, but this should give them a little bit of wiggle room.
Their 2-1 defeat away to Hamburger SV last weekend was disappointing, but a 2-2 draw with Viktoria Köln 1904 in a friendly and their recent record of one win, two draws and two defeats suggest they're not yet on the skids.
Gladbach have been woefully poor so far
Borussia Mönchengladbach are the side that are on the rocks as Alexander Blessin's men sit 18th in the Bundesliga 2026/2027 after picking up zero points from their opening four games.
That's already a crisis situation and points to the fact that the club have not found their rhythm since Blessin took over as head coach on 22 September 2026.
They've lost all four of their opening matches in the league, being hammered 5-0 away by SC Freiburg before losing 3-4 at home to Mainz, then picking up a 1-1 draw away to FC St. Pauli in a midweek friendly.
Tactical matchup should suit the hosts
We're siding with the hosts to continue their solid start to the season as we feel they are the better prepared side and Gladbach have been so poor away so far.
Gladbach are yet to score a single away goal in the Bundesliga 2026/2027, suffering a 5-0 defeat to SC Freiburg. That's a terrible attacking return after just two road games, so the Geißböcke should be able to keep them at bay.
That's if Wagner's 4-2-3-1 system, which relies on balance, controlled possession phases and pace in transition to get the striker on his own, holds up against Blessin's 3-4-2-1 system, which is built on wing-backs, high pressing and fast transitions.
But the visitors have lacked consistency recently and we're taking Köln to take at least a point from this matchup, especially given their positive start and the fact that Köln have had their number in this fixture recently.
Punters should expect goals
Over 2.5 goals at 1/2 and Both Teams to Score at 9/20 are the best bets in this one as the lower mid-table Köln side will be looking to make this an open affair, while the visitors can't help but play into that.
The last time this derby was played at this ground was in the Bundesliga 2025/2026 season and the scoreline ended up 3-3, so the evidence points towards another open matchup.
Thijs Dallinga is Köln's leading scorer in the Bundesliga 2026/2027 with two goals in three games, while Gladbach's top scorer is Hugo Bolin with two in four, but he needs a good supply of balls to run on to. Linton Maina has two of Köln's six goals in their last five matches, so he will be dangerous in the box, while Franck Honorat has two assists in four for Gladbach so the craft comes through him.
