- Charlotte have won three, drawn two and lost just one of six MLS 2026 home games.
- NYCFC have won one, drawn one and lost two of their four MLS 2026 away games.
No draw in a fixture of recent playoff participants
Neither club looks capable of doing much better than mid-table in 2026, with the hosts in 16th on 15 points from 12 matches and the visitors down at 24th on 12 points from 11 games.
They are two of the most organised teams in MLS 2026 and, with plenty of playoff experience in the squad, will still be in the mix at the end of the season. Dean Smith has been in charge of Charlotte since December 2023 and has made them a compact, solid, deep-block unit that likes to transition quickly via long balls and set pieces when they do get possession.
So this is a clash of two teams with very different approaches to the game - NYCFC like to have the ball and build from the back while they will press high up the pitch in a selective manner to try and win possession in areas where they can quickly create turnovers. NYCFC have played in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 in the last few games with Pascal Jansen favouring the latter since taking charge in January 2025. It makes for an intriguing chess match, particularly in the midfield, and one that will be all the more interesting because of the clubs’ recent playoff history and the need for momentum in the 2026 race.
City can keep it close in Carolina
New York City FC have won only one of their last five matches with a win, a draw and three defeats while Charlotte have had a run of four defeats, one draw and no wins during the same period. But the hosts have failed to win their last two home games against NYCFC and lost at Bank of America Stadium only once since the start of MLS 2026.
So with the value tilted in Charlotte’s favour at 11/10 and NYCFC slightly overpriced at 21/10, we will take the narrow favourites to get their home record back on track. NYCFC have split their last two away games, and recently beat New York Red Bulls in the US Open Cup and lost to D.C. United in MLS 2026, but can make a close run of it against Charlotte’s deep block.
The visitors have found their creative spark in Maxi Moralez, who has delivered six assists in 11 MLS 2026 games and they have the goal threat of Talles Magno, who has four of their total of 12 in the past five games, up front. Charlotte have the reliable targetman in Pep Biel, who has bagged six times this term.
Backing both teams to score at 3/5 looks the way to go because neither side will be sitting back and expecting to keep things tight. Charlotte have conceded an average of 1.17 at home while NYCFC have shipped 1.25 goals per game on the road.
