- Manchester City are unbeaten in five matches (W3, D2).
- Chelsea have failed to win their last two games (L2).
Stamford Bridge stalemate in a league of its own
While Liam Rosenior has done a good job at Chelsea since taking over in January 2026, the Blues have lacked the tactical flexibility to deal with the ever-evolving Manchester City since his appointment.
The hosts have failed to beat City in their last two head-to-heads, and 1-1 was the scoreline when the two sides last met at the Etihad three months ago.
The Blues have won only one, drawn one and lost three of their five games since that 1-1 draw, a run that has seen their European qualification aspirations slip following a 0-1 home defeat to Newcastle and a 3-0 loss to Everton.
No team has played more chess than the Citizens
They have the most progressive Premier League philosophy of the entire league and they play an intricate 4-3-3 system that evolves into a 3-2-5 when they have possession, controlling the build-up from deep and creating midfield overloads.
It’s a beautifully structured system, but one that doesn’t work as well against teams who have adapted their systems to play in the same way - and that has been a problem for Chelsea against Manchester City.
Andree Jeglertz has toyed with a retooled 3-2-4-1 or 4-2-3-1, and they have managed to keep themselves competitive at the top end of the table by using a hybrid of City’s classic positional play with more high-intensity transitions and verticality.
City are second on 61 points from 30 games, while Chelsea are 6th on 48 points from 31. Rosenior’s side will have to be at their best to take anything from this game, but that might not be enough against a Manchester City side that are in better form.
City to edge out a Stamford Bridge thriller
Odds of 53/100 for over 2.5 goals and 12/25 for both teams to score suggest this will be an open game with both sides going for it, which should make for an entertaining match.
City are favoured to take the points at 23/20, but we can’t back them with much confidence given that Chelsea have the same philosophy, so it may be better to back the visitors to edge out a result.
Joao Pedro is Chelsea’s main outlet going forward, having scored 14 Premier League goals in 31 appearances and four of Chelsea’s last five. But Erling Haaland leads the scoring charts with 22 in 29 for City and Nico O’Reilly has also been in fine form, netting four of City’s last eight goals.
