- Cruz Azul are joint 2nd in the Clausura Liga MX table with 28 points
- Cruz Azul and Tijuana have split their last five meetings, including three separate 3 - 0 scorelines
Crucial Clausura clash could be tight or one-sided
Cruz Azul and Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente face off on Saturday in a critical clash in the closing stages of the Liga MX 2025-2026 season. The home side, led by Nicolás Larcamón, will likely confirm their place in the Liguilla with a win while Tijuana need the points to stay in the playoff race.
Larcamón’s men have had an erratic run of form, having a run of league draws in March before the international break, followed by a 1-1 draw away to América and a 3-0 defeat to Los Angeles FC in the Champions Cup. Before the break, Cruz Azul were beaten at home by Pachuca.
Their 1-1 draw with América was a tough one to judge and the loss to the MLS club was not entirely unexpected, but Larcamón will be under pressure to maintain the team’s good form if they cannot beat a Tijuana side currently in mid-table with 18 points.
Tijuana can strike on the counter-attack
Tijuana’s coach, Sebastián ‘El Loco’ Abreu, has led his side to be pragmatic and energetic with a strong focus on transitions from defence to attack and a disciplined low block.
They beat León 3-0 away and followed it with a 1-0 home win over Tigres, but their results have been patchy with three defeats, including a 3-0 loss at Necaxa.
Tijuana have seen the return of Gilberto Mora from injury, which should bring some more dynamism to their midfield and additional attacking options, with Kevin Castañeda offering their main target in the box.
The Xolos’ style will be a severe test of Cruz Azul’s ability to play through a compact defence or create chances on the break. Larcamón’s team are an aggressive pressing team, playing their best football when in possession and moving the ball forward with speed and intelligence.
Odds-on hosts can just edge Tijuana in Puebla
Shamar Nicholson and Adonis Preciado bring physicality and directness to Tijuana’s front line, while the new signing Diego Abreu adds some intrigue and depth. Cruz Azul have their own attacking options in Gabriel Fernández, who is the squad’s top scorer across all Cruz Azul competitions, and the creative José Paradela, who has also contributed some important goals, ranking among Cruz Azul’s leading scorers this spring.
The bookmakers have made Cruz Azul 2/5 favourites to win this clash with Xolos 23/4 and the draw 77/20. Our view is that Tijuana can certainly cause an upset on the day if they catch the hosts on a bad day and there is value in backing the draw or double chance.
But our preferred play here is for Cruz Azul to get the edge in a game that could be a lot closer than the odds suggest because Tijuana can be very dangerous on the attack. Backing Over 2.5 goals also makes sense, given both clubs have been involved in some open games recently and the Cuauhtémoc should be warm and mild enough for attacking soccer.
The teams have split their previous five meetings in all competitions, with Cruz Azul holding a 3-2 advantage. The last five meetings have featured three 3-0 scorelines, which shows how the momentum can swing one way or another depending on who starts the stronger.
