Motherwell sit 5th in the Premiership 2026/2027 table with eight points from five matches, one more than Dundee FC in 6th with seven points from six games, but both sides will be expecting to pick up a few more before the season starts to take shape.
The Dee have won just one of their last five Premiership 2026/2027 games, drawing one and losing three, while Motherwell have an identical record over the same period, suggesting this will be a close encounter.
Motherwell are rightful favourites at 61/50 for this one, but Dundee are a touch overpriced at 49/25 for the win with the draw at 51/20, so I'll be taking Both Teams to Score at 3/5.
Goals at both ends the safest approach
Steven Pressley has overseen a bit more structure and organisation in the team since taking the Dundee hot seat on 2 June 2025. His side have adopted a more structured, possession-based setup with compact midfield units, whereas before they were simply looking to get men forward.
This means that Dundee may look to absorb pressure and be ready to spring into life on the break, while the Steelmen are a high-tempo, possession-based team with a strong press in the opposition half. Alfred Johansson has done a good job keeping the Motherwell model ticking over since taking over on 1 July 2026.
A chess match ensues, with Motherwell being the more proactive side, but Dundee can hit them on the counter attack if they get space in behind. That's why both teams scoring looks the safest bet here.
No clear cut winner at Dens Park
Dundee beat Motherwell 2-1 at home in the last meeting six months ago, but the last three head-to-heads have all been level with one win apiece and one draw.
This could easily go either way, but I'm taking Motherwell to edge out a result as they are the better placed club and their away stats are slightly stronger than Dundee's at home, particularly in the scoring department.
Dundee have scored 1.33 goals per game at home in this competition and have conceded 1.00. Motherwell have scored 1.67 away from home and have allowed 1.67. Dundee have averaged 1.3 goals in the last five home games against Motherwell, while Motherwell have managed 1.3 goals per away game in the same number of meetings.
