Stalemate expected in steel city
Motherwell have made a solid start to the Premiership 2026/2027 campaign, sitting 4th with four points after two games. The Steelmen welcome Dundee United FC to Fir Park on Wednesday as they seek their first win of the season at home.
Motherwell will have been delighted to have beaten HJK Helsinki 2-0 in their opening game, but they followed that up with a 1-0 extra-time loss to Stenhousemuir and a 3-1 defeat against Bundesliga side SC Freiburg.
The last five matches for Motherwell in all competitions read won 1, drawn 2 and lost 2, a solid but unspectacular return to say the least. It's a run of results which has been both entertaining and effective in patches, but it's also one which has failed to provide a rhythm for the side.
Dundee United have made a poor start to the season, sitting 11th in the table with just one point from their first three games, and they need a win soon if they are to get off the bottom of the table.
The Terrors have lost each of their last two games, a 4-0 defeat to Celtic and a 2-0 loss to city rivals Dundee FC. United are struggling to build any momentum and the only thing which looks set to keep the hosts on the back foot is their compact pressing and ability to transition quickly when they win the ball.
Side with the Steelmen
Alfred Johansson's high-tempo, build-from-the-back system has already forged a sharper, more constructive Motherwell side and his 4-2-3-1 shape should try and pin United back and dictate the rhythm.
They should get some joy through Ibrahim Said, who has 1 goal in 2 Premiership 2026/2027 games, but he could do with some support and Dylan Williams has shown some great creativity in the final third with 1 assist in 1 appearance.

They should fare better than that, but Motherwell look the more likely winner, so we're going to side with them here. The odds are a bit short, though, so we're backing a Motherwell win and both teams to score.
