There will be no turning back for Farnham Town and AFC Totton on Saturday's National League South 2026-2027 opener at The Memorial Ground. The hosts are the favourite to win but the visitors have enough goal power to keep this one close and competitive.
Paul Johnson has moulded Farnham into an organised and hard-running side that can play some football with purpose. Farnham Town are a team that have shown they can press in blocks and play some good progressive possession football and they have the steel to match, which is why they are able to maintain the momentum they finished last season with into the new campaign.
Their pre-season results, which include a 1-0 win at Eastleigh, a 1-1 draw with Yeovil Town and a 2-2 away at Rochdale, have shown that they are capable of matching the bigger clubs in terms of intensity and belief.
Billy Clifford remains the engine of the side and his creativity and leadership was key to Farnham's play-off run that was ultimately crowned with success. Rakish Bingham is a proper focal point and gives them a sharper edge up top while his proven National League South goal record will be key in this division.
Scott Rendell's Totton side are a little more direct and rely on transitions, wing service and a front three with the ability to hurt teams on the break. Tony Lee is the main man here and he is the most likely to punish any wobble that Farnham have on their big day.
But Rendell's men have plenty of experience themselves with Scott Rendell providing some old-fashioned nous and a touch of streetwise presence. Totton have had mixed results in their recent competitive games, going down 1-6 at home to Farnborough earlier this year, but they beat Eastbourne Borough 3-2 away from home and have two recent wins over Bath City and Dorking Wanderers to kick-start their National League South campaign.
Farnham look best placed to edge it at home but we think Totton have enough firepower to ensure a close contest. Both teams to score looks the better bet at 11/20 in the circumstances while over 2.5 goals at 31/50 is our pick in the main market.
