- Manchester City U21 have won 4 of their last 5 matches, while Norwich City U21 have won just 2 of their last 5.
- City are unbeaten at home in Premier League 2, winning 8 and drawing 1 of their 9 games on their own patch.
- Norwich have lost both of their most recent away fixtures.
Wilkinson’s City system to make the difference
Manchester City U21 head into Monday’s clash with Norwich City U21 as the clear favorites for the win, although the odds of 1/10 on offer for the hosts are a clear overreaction to the two sides’ respective quality.
The Sky Blues are currently in fifth spot on 37 points from 19 games, while Norwich are in 23rd after picking up just 20 points from the same number of matches.
City boss Benjamin Wilkinson has instilled a clear philosophy at the Etihad Campus since taking charge in July 2024, with the U21 side’s play based around controlling the ball in possession, creating positional overloads, and pressing in a structured and selective manner. They control the territory and they control the tempo in games, and it’s a very Guardiola-approved way of playing.
Norwich will arrive with a different tactic on Monday and will look to attack on the counter and get the ball wide and into the box as quickly as possible. There will be much more risk in their play than in City’s, and it is likely to cost them, as Norwich are much more vulnerable in transition.
Norwich’s travel sickness set to continue
City have won their last two at home, beating Liverpool Academy 2-0, and they netted five at Birmingham Academy before losing 1-0 to Derby County Academy away from home.
Norwich arrive after a mixed bag of results, losing 2-1 to Aston Villa Academy on the road and thumping West Bromwich Albion Academy 4-1 at home. They have won just two of their nine Premier League 2 away fixtures, drawing twice and losing five, conceding 19 goals in total.
City have scored 35 goals in their 9 home league games and with Norwich conceding 19 on the road, it’s no surprise that the market is predicting goals, with Over 2.5 goals available at 9/50. With the City system in place, a comprehensive home victory should be the order of the day.
