- Norwich City U21 are 23rd with 17 points from 17 matches.
Villa’s young Villans need a response
Aston Villa U21 are in inconsistent form, which is reflected in their table position. Josep Gombau’s men - the Spaniard took charge in January 2024 - have won just one of their last five matches (W1, D2, L2) and are coming into this clash with the Canaries on the back of a two-game losing streak.
Villa lost 4-0 to Manchester City Academy and 3-4 to Newcastle United Academy in their last two matches, both of which came at home. They have won only two of their eight home games in PL2 - losing the other six - so Norwich will like their chances on Friday.
The U21 Canaries are also in inconsistent form, registering one win, two draws and two defeats in their last five. Their two most recent outings saw them beat Stoke City Academy 4-2 at home and draw 2-2 with Arsenal Academy at home.
An open game between contrasting styles
Villa Park is where the two sides will meet in a clash that, although there is no real history to talk about, should be a cracking encounter between two teams that have contrasting styles.
Gombau is a typical ‘possession-based’ coach who likes to play with a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 system. He sets his team up with two holding midfielders and a number 10 that creates, while Villa tend to build from the back at a variable tempo, looking to transition vertically with the quality of their creative midfielders.
Norwich, on the other hand, are much more direct. They like to set up in a mid-to-low block and have a talented front three in youth. They rotate them regularly, but they all possess pace and are great to run at teams on the counter.
Back goals when Villa host Norwich
Both of these teams have leaky defences and, while the Villa side are more exposed at home, Norwich have conceded 17 away goals in their eight PL2 matches at an average of 2.12 per game.
That’s why the odds of both teams scoring in this game - Yes at 3/10 - are such a big favourite. It’s not as big as Villa’s 5/4, or Norwich’s 133/100, but still a strong favourite in the context of a PL2 game.
Villa will be keen to bounce back after their two-game skid, but Norwich will give them a real test and we’ll take the Villans to just edge it in an exciting, end-to-end clash. Kadan Young has scored three of Villa’s last nine goals in his last five appearances and will be their main threat on Friday.
