- Southampton’s head-to-head record with Preston North End reads two wins, one defeat, and one draw over the last four meetings.
- Preston North End are without a win in their last two home Championship fixtures (D1, L1).
- Southampton have lost one of their last five Championship fixtures (W2, D2).
Saints to stop the Lilywhites from blooming at Deepdale
Southampton will be extremely hard to beat for a well-disciplined Preston North End side this Saturday, when fifth-placed Saints make the trip to Deepdale to take on 12th-placed PNE in the 2025-2026 Championship.
Paul Heckingbottom has done a fantastic job to keep the Lancashire club in the upper echelons of the Championship after taking the reins in August 2024, and the Lilywhites have largely been a very compact unit this term.
Heckingbottom’s men operate a 3-5-2 system, and the team are particularly adept at playing with width, sitting compact in a mid-to-low block and springing into life with vertical transitions when in possession.
The recent 2-3 away win over Sheffield United was a perfect example of how Preston operate, however, their form has dipped a little of late with no win in two at Deepdale and an inconsistent record of two wins, a draw and two defeats from the last five.
North End haven’t conceded many goals at home in the Championship this season, shipping 27 times in 22 games (W8, D7, L7), but Saints can find the net in numbers and have the quality to test their resolute hosts.
Southampton are worth a punt at 71/100
Saints have won nine of their 22 away fixtures in the Championship this term, bagging a total of 41 goals. Tonda Eckert has done a superb job with the club since taking over in November 2025.
Eckert’s side can play a variety of styles, but they are at their most effective when they mix possession dominance with direct, high-intensity pressing and quick attacking transitions.
The Saints have won two, drawn two and lost one of their last five matches, drawing 2-2 with Ipswich Town and Bristol City. They also fell to a one-goal defeat against Manchester City in the FA Cup during that spell, but were unfortunate not to get anything from that game.
Southampton are 71/100 favourites for this one, but that’s a touch short considering Preston are 153/50 for the win and the hosts have not beaten Southampton at home in recent meetings.
Preston’s last victory over Saints came away from home and that 2-0 success was five months ago, so we’re going to back Eckert’s team to edge this contest.
With both sides enjoying decent goal-scoring records in the Championship this campaign, ‘Both teams to score - Yes’ at 13/20 looks a decent play ahead of what could be a lively contest. Alfie Devine has been the conductor for PNE this season with three assists in the team's last five fixtures, and he’s the key provider to Lewis Dobbin, who is the chief scoring threat for them with nine goals from 38 Championship appearances.
Saints have a number of goalscorers, but the most prolific is Adam Armstrong with 11 from 29 appearances, while Cyle Larin has bagged three in their last five games.
