- Team form: Southampton have lost just one of their last five Championship games (W2, D2).
- Away record: Southampton have scored 41 goals away from home in the Championship this season, winning nine of 22 away league games.
Preston’s solid structure to take on Saints’ shape-shifters
Preston North End can be a tough team to break down at home, while Southampton are flexible and full of energy in a new shape under Tonda Eckert. This should be a fascinating matchup between Preston’s rigid shape and the Saints’ fluid style when the sides meet on Saturday.
Preston’s setup
Paul Heckingbottom took charge of PNE in August 2024 and has set his side up to be solid and compact. His side play a 3-5-2 system and like to play from a mid-to-low block, stretching the play wide with their wingbacks, but getting compact when out of possession.
Saints’ approach
They’re tough to break down, but Southampton have been very good since Eckert took over in November 2025, who has got the Saints to be flexible, as they can control games with the ball and then turn the game on its head with quick, high-intensity bursts of pressing and directness in attack. Cyle Larin has been in especially good form, scoring three goals in his last five appearances for Saints.
Saints look the best bet
Southampton come into this game in solid form with just one defeat in their last five, with two draws against Ipswich Town (2-2) and Bristol City (2-2) and a narrow defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup. They should be able to win this match against Preston, who will have been buoyed by their 2-3 away win over Sheffield United but were poor in losing to Birmingham City (2-1) a few days later.
The home side are 12th in the Championship with 60 points from 45 games while Saints are fifth with 77 from the same number of games. The away side can take encouragement from the last four head-to-head meetings, in which they have won two and lost just once, while Preston failed to beat them at home in recent meetings.
The Lilywhites are listed as dark horses at 4.06, which is a huge discrepancy when compared to the odds-on Saints’ price of 1.71. We believe the visitors are the better bet here, but we also think Preston can keep this close enough for a ‘Both teams to score - Yes’ bet to be a profitable option at 1.65.
Goal-getters can keep scoreboard busy
- Adam Armstrong is in fine form up front for Southampton, having scored 11 goals in 29 Championship appearances this term, but Lewis Dobbin is the main threat for Preston.
- The youngster has scored 9 times in 38 Championship outings this campaign and is getting the ball in good positions.
- Alfie Devine has been a key provider of late, providing assists for 3 of PNE’s 7 goals in their last 5 games.
