This Sunday’s Ligue 1 clash between Racing Club Strasbourg and AS Monaco pits two sides in vastly different stages of transition against one another and should be an open, end-to-end game. Gary O’Neil’s appointment at Strasbourg in January 2026 is certainly beginning to take effect, with the hosts more intense in their pressing triggers and quicker in their vertical movements.
O’Neil’s players have won one, drawn one and lost three of their last five in all competitions, but the last meeting between these two sides, a 3-1 home victory for Strasbourg in the Coupe de France three months ago, indicates that the more fluid, less structured approach favoured by the boss can be effective at the Stade de la Meinau.
However, Strasbourg remain a work in progress in terms of their tactical identity, which remains a hybrid of Rosenior’s more possession-based, structured build-up play and O’Neil’s more intensity-first approach. They are currently 8th in the Ligue 1 standings with 47 points from 32 games, a return which represents solid consistency in the mid-table.
Monaco have been far more volatile throughout the season, sitting 7th with 54 points from 33 matches, but their recent form (W1, D2, L2) has not been good, but their European qualification hopes remain alive. Strasbourg’s talisman is Joaquin Panichelli, who has scored 16 Ligue 1 goals in 27 appearances this season, while Monaco’s chief striker Folarin Balogun has scored 13 in 29. Balogun is the more consistent threat, having scored three in Monaco’s last five.
