- Shelbourne have won three of the last five head-to-heads in the Premier Division 2026.
- Shelbourne have a shaky home record in the Premier Division 2026 (W2, D5, L5).
- Dundalk have won only three of their last 11 away matches in the Premier Division 2026 but have drawn six and lost only two.
Shelbourne have a slight edge in a classic contest
Shelbourne will host Dundalk in Dublin at Tolka Park on Friday in a clash of two teams that are set up for very different styles of football. Joey O'Brien's Red and White Army (appointed as head coach on 22 June 2025) are organised, possession-first and pressing units that like to crowd the midfield, build from the back and put pressure on teams that struggle to withstand that approach.
O'Brien's side have had mixed results in their last five (W1, D3, L1) with a 2-1 home win over Shamrock Rovers a highlight, but a 0-3 home defeat to Bohemian FC a lowlight. Shelbourne are currently 5th in the Premier Division 2026, but have 30 points from 22 games, while their visitors are 4th with 35 from the same tally.
Dundalk are compact, direct and more suited to playing on the counter attack, but Ciaran Kilduff has done a fantastic job since taking over as head coach on 6 November 2024, installing a 4-2-3-1/4-3-3 system that gets wide-runners free and gives his side a live wire between the lines in transition.
Dundalk could have enough about them to hold out
Dundalk come into this match in slightly better form than Shelbourne with three wins, a draw and a defeat from their last five, but it is a little bit patchy. The Lilywhites grabbed a fantastic 2-1 win away to Bohemian FC, but followed it up with a 2-3 defeat at home to struggling Waterford FC. Shelbourne's Harry Wood has been their main outlet of late, with 10 goals in 22 Premier Division 2026 appearances, but the hosts' supply-line has been a little thin in recent weeks.
Daryl Horgan has been pulling the strings for Dundalk with 6 goals in 21 appearances and three assists in their last five, so his influence could be pivotal in this match. The midfield battle will ultimately decide it, and with Shelbourne having a slight advantage in the head-to-head, we think the hosts could nick it, but Dundalk have enough bite to hold them out.
With Shelbourne's home record not quite up to scratch and Dundalk averaging 1.45 goals for and conceding 1.73 on their travels, we feel the draw and both teams to score market has merit.
