Top of the table clash in the east
This Saturday’s League One clash between Stenhousemuir and Inverness Caledonian Thistle is arguably the most crucial fixture of the season so far and is sure to be a cagey affair between two intense rivals.
Stenhousemuir boss Gary Naysmith has instilled a real sense of discipline and organisation upon his men, qualities which have been the foundations of their promotion push this season. They play a deep block and try to get bodies behind the ball in a 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1 setup and are always a threat on the counter-attack where they can stretch the field and expose gaps with their pacey wide players.
Inverness CT have been a different beast altogether since Scott Kellacher took charge in October 2024. He’s implemented a high-intensity, high-tempo style with a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3, which sees his team press intensely and aim to overcrowd the final third with directness and pace. Stenhousemuir’s deep block should give the visitors plenty to chew on and may limit the visitors' intense pressing.
Stenhousemuir to edge it
Stenhousemuir are the favourites to win this clash, and I believe they can edge it. Their form is exceptional, and their home record is equally impressive. They’ve won their last two at home, are unbeaten in their last two home matches against Inverness and the last three meetings produced one win apiece and a draw, and will be riding high after two recent results - a 3-0 thrashing of Hamilton Academical here and a 2-2 draw at East Fife.
Inverness CT have been solid on the road this season, but there’s no doubt their results have dipped recently (D1 L1). They’ve won seven, drawn five, and lost three of their 15 away matches in League One and have only conceded 0.67 goals per match on average on their travels this term. I think the value here will lie in the hosts, as this is a match they can’t afford to lose with their title and promotion chase in their hands.
Stenhousemuir have conceded just 11 goals in 16 home matches in League One, winning nine, drawing six, and losing just one. With both sides solid at the back and the stakes high, I think this will be a tight, cagey affair with one team nicking it. For that reason, I’m going for a Stenhousemuir win and under 2.5 goals, and both teams not to score.
Ross Taylor is Stenhousemuir’s main threat in the final third, netting nine goals in 28 appearances in the third tier. He has three goals and three assists in his last five appearances. The top scorer for Inverness CT in League One is Alfie Bavidge, with ten goals in 31 games, while Chanka Zimba has chipped in with three goals in their last seven matches.
