Tranmere have failed to adapt to Wild’s new system
The clash of styles between Tranmere Rovers’ high-tempo, vertical pressing game and Colchester United’s ‘shape first, everything else second’ approach should make for some intriguing tactical intrigue on Monday. Rovers boss Peter Wild has overseen a wholesale change in how the club plays since taking over in March 2026, but the results have not yet reflected his new ideas.
Wild’s 3-4-2-1 system is an extremely aggressive setup with the wing-backs providing width, energy and some of the most intense pressing in the entire division. Charlie Whitaker is the club’s main attacking outlet and has hit ten League Two goals in 34 appearances this term.
Colchester are a complete contrast to Tranmere in that they are disciplined, well-structured and risk-averse since Danny Cowley took over in January 2024. Cowley’s men can play very patiently and allow their opponents to do all the chasing, which can see them stifle the opposition and hit on the counterattack.
Cowley’s system is working well
Colchester are 14th in League Two with 54 points from 39 games while Tranmere are 20th with 36 points from the same number of matches, so the U’s should have too much to edge out a victory in this clash.
Rovers have not won in their last two home clashes with Colchester, so the head-to-head record also favours the away side and the 23/20 quote for the U’s to come out on top is very attractive. Colchester will expect to nick this game thanks to their better form, H2H record and structured style of play.
Rovers have been bad at home
Tranmere have won four, drawn five and lost 11 of their 20 home League Two matches this campaign - conceding 33 times at an average of 1.65 per game. They have lost all three of their most recent home matches, going down 3-0 to Harrogate Town and 1-0 to Swindon Town.
Colchester are inconsistent on the road, but they have won one of their last three away games to demonstrate that they can be gritty travellers. They drew 1-1 with Walsall in their most recent fixture and lost 1-0 away at Bromley before that.
Harry Anderson has hit two of Colchester’s last three goals and looks the best option to be the top scorer for the visitors on Monday, although Jack Payne remains their top scorer overall with 11 in 32 League Two appearances.
