- FK Qarabag are the clear favourites at 1.12 and anything other than a home win would be a major surprise.
- Vestri have a mixed form with two wins, two draws and a defeat from their last five, but they have drawn their last two matches.
- Qarabag have won three and lost one of their four home matches in all competitions, scoring an average of 3.00 goals and conceding 0.50.
Hosts have pedigree, form and momentum
It is hard to make a case for anything other than a win for FK Qarabag when Azerbaijan's giants take on IF Vestri in UEFA Europa League Qualification 2026 on Thursday. The hosts have a long pedigree in European football, a steady form and good momentum going into this, while the odds of 1.12 look about right for their chances of success.
Long-term boss Qurban Qurbanov has been in charge of Qarabag since July 2008 and his side have become a steady force in this competition over that time. The Azerbaijani side are all about a compact 4-2-3-1 system that gets bodies behind the ball, uses the full backs to attack, and plays with the double pivot, the number tens and the wingers linking up in a quick, give-and-go game. They can sit in and pinch the pitch against opponents, but are equally comfortable with their foot on the ball.
Vestri are a decent side on their day, but they are far too short to come to Azerbaijan and get a result. David Smari Lamude has been in charge since January 2023 and Vestri come to play compact, pragmatic football with a 4-4-2 system that clogs passing lanes, wins second balls and gets bodies forward on the counter. This could be a possession-vs-block contest with Breki Hermannsson, their main spark at the moment, scoring two of Vestri's six goals in their last five games.
Vestri are not quite up to Qarabag’s level
Vestri have five wins, two draws and three defeats from their last 10 in all competitions and that's a good run of form, but they haven't been up against anything like the level of opposition that Qarabag represent. Their two most recent matches, a 1-1 draw at Throttur Reykjavik and a 0-0 draw away to UMF Grindavik, show that they can dig in when needed and they should certainly be able to make this a close match.
Qarabag are four wins and a draw from their last five, however, and have gone 2-0 at home. Their two most recent games were a 4-3 away win at FK Sumgayit and a 4-0 away win over WSG Tirol that showed their gutsy side.
Vestri have two wins, two draws and two defeats away from home across all competitions this term, while conceding an average of 1.33 goals per road game. This looks like a match for Qarabag to dominate and, although the draw is 7.5, there is enough of a gap in class for them to pinch a win and a Qarabag win to nil looks a sharp alternative to the outright market at a similar price to the 1X2.
