Chess match in Denmark as Køge look to make their mark
HB Køge (W) and Riga FC (W) clash for the first time in a competitive match-up in this UEFA Women's Champions League qualification semi-final, where a place in the mini-tournament final is the prize.
There is a real clash of styles here between the Danish champions and a Riga side who have been in red-hot form themselves, racking up 4-1 wins over Glentoran and Wrexham in the UWCL Q1 mini-tournament before going on a scoring spree in domestic action.
Køge, who have made a great start to the 2026-2027 campaign, come into this game on the back of back-to-back wins and clean sheets. They are also among the early pace-setters in the A-Liga, where they finished 2025/26 as champions. In short, they are a quality side with some momentum.
Riga are a goal threat, but Køge have a finishing edge
Kristian Mørch has them set up in a way that should be very difficult for opponents to deal with on Wednesday. Køge play a very front-foot game, using a high-tempo, compact style to force the pace and press opponents into mistakes. They then recover the ball quickly and create chances, especially from wide areas.
Kyra Carusa looks a real threat for the Danes after scoring a goal against ASA Aarhus last time out. She brings movement, finishing ability and a proper penalty-box instinct to the team. Catherine Paulson has the late runs and power in the final third to complement Carusa, while Sarah Thygesen can supply the width and delivery - and she got on the scoresheet against ASA alongside a couple of assists.
Vadims Burlačuks' Riga, who defended their Latvian title, are very much the opposite. They are an attack-minded side with an adaptable structure that allows them to turn the screw when they need to. Glentoran and Wrexham certainly found that out in Q1, and Riga were able to rotate their forward line without losing their bite.
HB can make their quality and home advantage tell
Kumba Zainab Brima is the headline act in Riga's frontline and can get the better of any defence if they are caught out on the break, which they may be as they are better suited to a quick counter-attacking style. Katrīna Daņilova can also get between the lines and provide the sort of link-up play that turns pressure into chances, so this should be a competitive European fixture.
But HB Køge are a step up in class on the teams Riga beat in Q1 and even though Riga can do damage, they appear to be better suited to a quick counter-attacking style than the sustained pressure that Køge will exert. The 7.8 on the draw looks a bit steep here, but the hosts are the team to back with home advantage and a squad that appears to be well-balanced. A Køge win to nil is the way to go, while 2-0 has to be the cleanest option in the correct score market if they can get their press and wide play working early on.
