- Bayern München (W) lead Manchester United (W) 3-2 aggregate after the first leg of this UWCL quarter-final at Old Trafford.
- Bayern have won their last five competitive games, scoring 20 and conceding 4 goals in that run.
Bayern Munich are back
The 3-2 aggregate lead Bayern München (W) hold over their Manchester United (W) counterparts following last week’s first-leg matchup in the Women’s UCL quarter-final is a fair reflection of the first matchup between these two sides and we expect the Frauen-Bundesliga leaders to finish the job with another strong performance in Munich on Wednesday.
José Barcala’s side have hit their stride in 2025-2026, blasting their way to the top of the Frauen-Bundesliga with 19 wins and one draw from 20 matches and recording a 79-6 goal tally. The Bavarians are back in the mix as a European powerhouse, but they will need to put in another strong showing against a gritty United side to make sure of their passage to a semi-final showdown with either Barcelona or Real Madrid.
Skinner’s side will not fold
United would have been happy to take a 3-2 loss from Old Trafford back in early March as they knew their opponents well enough to assess the task ahead of them. Marc Skinner’s Red Devils have shown the ability to dig deep in domestic and continental campaigns this season, whether that was winning 2-1 against Everton after a goalless first half in December, or a 2-0 away victory at Atlético Madrid in the UWCL play-off away from home.
The visitors have a few issues to address, such as the set-piece defending that cost them in the last game, but they have the resilience and attacking talent to give this matchup a good run to the end. Fridolina Rolfö will be a threat from set-pieces and in transition, while Jess Park is a creative outlet who can hurt Bayern on her day.
Set-pieces and set pieces again
The odds for a Bayern win this Wednesday are not right, given the hosts are 51/100 to win and United are 23/5 to continue their fine European run. The 67/20 draw looks too big, too, as the Red Devils will need to score at least once to stay in the tie and that is unlikely.
Instead, we’re siding with over 2.5 goals at 12/25, as we expect goals to flow from this clash between two of the best teams in Europe. Both sides have shown a tendency to be dangerous from set-pieces in the recent meetings between these sides, so that looks another key area for the bettor to focus on.
Bayern’s bagging habit is an issue for United
Pernille Harder’s brace in the Manchester leg extended her tally and left her leading the Bundesliga scoring charts. Harder is a big threat for the home side on Wednesday and they’ll be going to her for service from Bayern’s wide creators on either side of Klara Bühl, who has been a constant threat in league and Europe.
Bayern have conceded just four goals in their last five competitive fixtures, which is a testament to the defensive stability provided by keepers Mahmutovic and Grohs, Vanessa Gilles and Stine Ballisager at the back, and their ball-hogging midfield.
United have a key goalkeeper in Phallon Tullis-Joyce, who ranks among WSL leaders in clean sheets, and the right blend of creativity and steel in midfield to make this clash competitive.
A chess match in the centre of the park and out wide
The hosts will try to dominate from the start and should control the game, but United have a plan that will make them a threat in the attacking third, so this should be a competitive game for the most part.
Bayern’s preferred 4-2-3-1 system allows for a lot of fluidity and versatility in the attack, which is where their second-ball dominance comes from. Barcala’s team control the vertical game, too, as they are just as comfortable playing in the channels as they are over the top.
Skinner’s United prefer a more structured approach, with a 4-2-3-1 or a narrow 4-3-3 that allows them to control space and suffocate opponents with counter-pressing. United will be looking to control the central areas and attack the Bavarians on the counter, which will make for an interesting chess match in midfield and out wide, where both teams are strong.
Cool and possibly damp conditions in Munich will affect the tempo of the game, which could lead to more long balls than normal from the home team, but United are no strangers to aerial battles and have the height to do some damage themselves.
