Pools vs Bluebirds in National League opener
There is no National League table to speak of in 2026-2027 as we welcome the new campaign with a bang on Saturday, but Hartlepool United are marginal favourites to open the season with a win against Barrow AFC at The Suit Direct Stadium.
The hosts are favourites at 107/100 with Barrow at 54/25 and the draw currently 117/50. It's worth noting that the Pools had a mixed pre-season - losing 3-0 to Grimsby Town on 25 July - and they face the challenge of integrating new players quickly after a summer of change.
Barrow arrive as the League Two survivors of 2025/26 and with higher expectations to boot so the visitors are likely to be more up for this clash with the Bluebirds carrying a point to prove.
Lee Clark’s men still a work in progress
Adam Murray's side have been open and upbeat in pre-season, although the back four have been stretched at times and not always convincing.
Lee Clark is determined to make Hartlepool compact and well-organised as he feels that intensity and competition for every first and second ball are key to his side's survival.
Hartlepool's pre-season has been mixed and Callum Cooke is the key man in terms of creating danger. The Pools look lively up front with the addition of fresh attacking weapon Jack Nolan, while Barrow have some real talent up top.
They have shown in pre-season that they can hurt teams through Alex Reid, Ben Whitfield and George Walker - the trio having already found the net in summer friendlies.
Bluebirds have talent to cause problems
The Bluebirds have been a little more convincing in friendlies, recording a 4-3 win over Mansfield Town and a 2-0 victory at Workington, and will need Rekeem Harper and the senior midfielders to make the rebuild work.
Barrow are likely to dominate possession and should have a decent chance to create and the game should open up when they press forward and stretch the play. Hartlepool will be more direct in transition and should have better structure to choke the middle of the pitch.
These two teams meet frequently in League Two and have shared the spoils over the last two years, with Hartlepool winning 3-1 on 29 April 2023 after coming back from behind and Barrow turning the tables to win 3-1 on 19 November 2022. Another clash back in the fourth tier finished 3-1 to the home team on 8 February 2022, so this match-up has been a bit of a swing both ways over the past couple of years.
We are going with the draw at an odd price of 117/50 as the most likely outcome in this opening-day clash, although a 2-1 home win is the sharpest call for the match result if Clark's new pieces slot in well right away.
