Marine v Macclesfield - too close to call on a Saturday showdown
Marine and Macclesfield will go head-to-head in the opening game of the National League North season at The Marine Travel Arena in England on Saturday and it should be a good contest. These two have split recent meetings, with Marine winning 1-0 away on 4 October 2025 and Macclesfield winning 4-2 away on 10 March 2026, and there was little to separate them in the Northern Premier League play-off final in May 2024, which was won by Marine. The visitors are favoured at 1/1 and the hosts are available at 21/10, although the draw looks the best value at 5/2 considering the recent history between the clubs and their pre-season form. It's a little too close to confidently back an away win, although Macclesfield are the pick if it all goes right for them.
Silkmen have the momentum
John Rooney's men have had a much better run of results in pre-season, capped off by a 5-2 win at Altrincham on 25 July and a 2-2 draw at Warrington Town six days prior.
Bobby Grant's Marine have had a mixed bag of results in the same period, drawing 1-1 with Blackburn Rovers in mid-July before two good wins at Colwyn Bay (2-0) and Prescot Cables (1-0). The result on the day may depend on which pre-season team each boss has selected, but the visitors are the more likely winners on current form.
Contrast of styles
Rooney's team are playing with an intensity and style, pressing high, playing on the front foot and breaking with tempo when they win the ball back. The fact that they split the recent meetings, each winning away, means he's probably not too bothered about the recent head-to-head record.
Grant's side are a little more pragmatic and will look to stay compact and give the opposition as little room to manoeuvre as possible. If they can get that right early on and then hit Macclesfield on the counterattack, they could drag the Silkmen into a scrap.
Squad news
George Kattah and Conor McAleny are two fresh faces that could liven things up for Marine, while Jack McIntyre adds security in goal.
James Edmondson looks a key man for the away side as he can control the midfield, get on the end of set pieces and provide an almost constant stream of end product.
The goals markets suggest a cagey affair, with under 2.5 goals at 19/20 and both teams to score - Yes at 31/50 the best play, but we'll go for 1-1 and 1-2 in the correct score market as a cagey draw or narrow away win look like the most likely outcomes of this clash between two teams that have both made some progress since their last meeting in the NLL.
