National League North new boys face off
Morecambe and Spennymoor Town meet in their first competitive fixture on Saturday and the historical record offers no assistance ahead of this National League North curtain-raiser as the only previous clash between the two sides was won 3-0 by Morecambe against Spennymoor United way back in the 1994-95 Football Conference season.
The Shrimps are looking to bounce back immediately from relegation in 2025-26 and should be more than capable of competing in the National League North, while Spennymoor, who finished in the top-10 bracket of NLN at the end of 2025-26, will be licking their lips at the prospect of being a live play-off candidate rather than a relegation battler.
Shrimps should have the edge
Adam Lakeland appears to be going about his pragmatic rebuild in the right way with the structure, organisation and, if all goes well, defensive solidity at the heart of his plans. Lennon Dobson will be an attacking outlet for the hosts, but with the departure of Jack Nolan this summer, they need one of their players to step up and fill the goals gap.
Liam Hogan, with his veteran steel, will be a key component of the side and will be a major asset in a side that has had a heavy turnover. Miguel Azeez has the quality to be a good midfield axis for the team and his ability to control tempo and dictate terms will be crucial to Morecambe's chances of a quick bounce back.
Spennymoor will be looking to make an immediate statement by claiming an away victory on Saturday, which would be a proper statement. Tommy Miller's men will be a threat, especially if they can continue to play with the same energy and directness that characterised their pre-season.
Go for a goal-fest
Spennymoor have played some good football in the build up to the first game and recorded a 2-1 defeat to Hartlepool United, where the impressive Richie Bennett was on the scoresheet. Richie Bennett could be the live wire in this Spennymoor side.
The Morecambe season opener is a 31/50 favourite against Spennymoor's 17/5, and the draw is a massive 57/20. Morecambe are the superior side on paper and probably should be a touch shorter, so they'll take the home advantage to edge this one. But the odds suggest the game will be tight and we'll push it to look more open by taking both teams to score (Yes) and Over 2.5 goals.
Morecambe's form line is poor with a 3-0 win over Bamber Bridge followed by a 1-0 defeat at Barrow, but the Shrimps are still carrying a few scars from their demotion and the squad is in flux. Spennymoor's form is better, they look more organised and Miller's continuity at the club is a plus as he heads into the opening fixture with the team playing well.
Morecambe will set up in a compact back four or three and try to build up from the back with control, while Spennymoor will use a three-at-the-back shape with wing-backs, so they should be able to overload the Shrimps wide areas with their extra numbers. A 1-1 or 2-1 Morecambe result is the most likely result in our view, but if the visitors can nick a turnover or two and get something from their set-piece threat, then the spoils could go their way.
