- Bedford Town won the most recent head-to-head meeting 2-1, but Oxford City lead the overall rivalry 4-3, with two draws in nine clashes dating back to 2009.
- Oxford City are priced as the 19/20 favourites to win the opening fixture of the 2026/27 National League North season ahead of Bedford Town at 11/5 and the draw at 51/20.
- Both teams will be looking for an early momentum in a season where there is no league standings to go by just yet.
Two old foes make for a tasty opener
Oxford City and Bedford Town should put on a cracking curtain raiser for the 2026/27 National League North campaign at The RAW Charging Stadium this Saturday. Ross Jenkins' men are the 19/20 favourites to take the points in what is likely to be a tough contest against a Bedford side that will be just as desperate to take an early lead in the division.
Oxford have the better of the rivalry between the clubs, but Bedford won the most recent fixture, including a 2-1 success away from home. That result means there may be a little more bite to the opening clash, but the bet that catches the eye is a home victory for the Hoops at the price, as opposed to any of the goals markets which are all very finely poised at the time of writing.
The Hoops will not be disappointed to have Tyronе Marsh in their ranks for the new campaign after the ex-Bedford Town striker hit 25-27 goals in 46 games for Bedford Town in 2025/26. The 27-year-old brings a ruthless, prolific edge to the team in the final third and he will be tough to live with on Saturday, especially if Oxford can get the better of Bedford in the wide areas. Jenkins' side play a proactive, possession-based game with lots of attacking wing-backs and a high press that is supposed to force teams into making mistakes high up the pitch.
Both teams are playing well
Bedford will look to Ellis Brown and George Moncur to provide the creativity in midfield, following Marsh's departure, and they will be able to lean on both players to do the heavy lifting in terms of driving the ball forward and winning second balls. Harry Smart's team are shaping up to be a compact, direct team who will set up to be organised at the back, hit on the break and create danger at set piece time, which could be a recipe for success in some of the tough away games that they will face in 2026/27.
Oxford's pre-season results have been mixed, with two 2-1 defeats against Walton & Hersham and Slough Town in July, but it has been a busy couple of weeks for Bedford with a full slate of fixtures to prepare them for the season ahead. There looks to be more of a structure in place with Bedford Town, who finished 2025/26 strong and the match odds here are a little rich for them at 11/5. Oxford are more likely to win this, but the value is all at the other end of the spectrum with the draw at 51/20.
Oxford edge it, but don’t discount a Bedford goal
The bet that makes the most sense here is to back Oxford to come out on top in a game that should be lively enough to see both sides on the scoreboard. Over 2.5 goals at 17/20 and Both Teams To Score at 7/10 both have merit, but the game will be won and lost in the half-spaces, where Jenkins' wing-back system will go up against Bedford's compact block.
The game could go either way, but the home advantage and firepower of Marsh should see Oxford edge it, although our correct score fancy of 2-1 could just as easily be a 1-1 draw if Bedford can make it tight at the back. Byron Wilson should give the hosts the balance to play on the front foot and provide steady width and two-way running from the full-back positions in Jenkins' system.
