Both Merthyr Town and Hednesford Town enter the 2026-27 National League North on zero points and the opening-day bragging rights and momentum can be up for grabs at Penydarren Park. This is the first competitive meeting between these sides in the history of the game and it promises to be an intriguing affair between two well-drilled outfits.
Merthyr did finish the campaign with a bit of a wobble, losing three of their final five competitive matches. They do score goals, however, having put three past Marine on the last day of the season and scoring in each of their previous five.
Paul Michael has kept Merthyr on the right side of the ball for years now and his 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 system has them pressing in phases and working the channels effectively, which is what they will attempt to do on Saturday. Jamie Cogman is a calming presence in goal, while club captain Matthew Harris is a 400+ appearance talisman in a side that likes to play from the back.
His experience and authority at the back is balanced by the experience and punch of Dan Turner, while Tony Breiden and Joel Taylor provide Kelvin Davis with some extra steel and know-how in the spine. Cawley Cox is their main man in the forward line, a regular goalscorer and a constant threat in the box.

Hednesford finished the previous campaign in red-hot form, going unbeaten in their final five matches to seal promotion and take their spot in the National League North via the play-offs. They beat Warrington Rylands 1-1 AET (5-3 on penalties) in the play-off final and will arrive in England with momentum on their side.
Kelvin Davis' side are a compact and mobile unit that like to sit in a mid-block before making their move on the break and have the pace to play vertically when they get the ball. Ahkeem Rose is their most potent weapon in the front third, a double-figure goalscorer who possesses plenty of end-product.
These two sides are evenly matched, but Merthyr should come out on top on home turf and I'm backing the Merthyr Town to get the win at 8/5, with Hednesford available at 133/100 and the draw coming in at 51/20. Both sides will be desperate to kick off with three points, but this is a tough one to call, so I will go for a Merthyr win 2-1.
The two contrasting styles should make this a chess match, with Merthyr attempting to dictate and Hednesford looking to nick the ball and go vertical in a flash, so I'm going for both teams to score at 1/2 points and Over 2.5 goals at 31/50 in the match result market, which fits the feel of this opener.
