- Newcastle have failed to win either of their last two home clashes with Liverpool.
- Liverpool have conceded eight goals across their three away assignments this season (average 2.67).
- Newcastle have conceded five goals across their four home games this season (W2, D1, L1).
An intriguing clash of systems
Newcastle boss, Matthias Jaissle, is trying to implement a Red-Bull-influenced style of high-intensity, high-pressure football. Newcastle have been pressing teams into submission, switching between formations and creating quick vertical transitions, but they have conceded five goals in four home fixtures.
Andoni Iraola's Liverpool have a similar high-press system in which they have been putting teams under immediate pressure, they've been playing some electric football at times, with their players switching positions and making incisive runs, but they've conceded eight in three away matches.
Newcastle have the most solid of these two systems with a more zonal approach, whereas Liverpool are a little more frenetic and direct. The turnovers in midfield could define this clash, but we feel that Liverpool have the edge with their sharper transitions in the attacking third.
Lots of goals likely at St James’ Park
Liverpool are 9/10 favourites for this clash, but Newcastle will certainly be right up there at 5/2 and the draw makes plenty of appeal at 29/10.
The Reds will be coming into this one on the back of a two-match losing streak, but they did beat National League side Wrexham 1-0 before a 2-4 defeat away to Leeds United and a 2-3 loss away to AS Monaco in their last three.
Newcastle have also had mixed results in their previous five outings, with a 1-2 home defeat to Bayer 04 Leverkusen and a 1-1 home draw with Racing Club Strasbourg in their two most recent games.
Lots to like about Liverpool in this spot
Harvey Barnes has been Newcastle's cutting edge, netting two of his side's six goals in their past five matches, but we can't ignore the fact that Liverpool won the last clash in the Premier League 2025/2026 by a score of 4-1. Liverpool should be able to get the better of this contest and have already won three of the last five meetings with the Magpies. But we like both teams to score at 11/25 and over 2.5 goals at 12/25, a little more than the Reds at 9/10.
