Ipswich Town can outplay Pomme’s pragmatic set-up
John Mousinho’s Portsmouth and Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich Town are two of the most interesting sides in the Championship in terms of their respective tactical identities and how they execute them.
Pompey are a pragmatic side, typically set up in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 system which ensures they have a compact defensive shape, with plenty of men behind the ball. When they do have possession, the emphasis is on moving the ball wide and creating a numerical advantage, but they tend to get forward in waves and then look to transition back to their compact shape quickly.
McKenna’s approach is very different as the Tractor Boys will always look to progress the ball first, dominating possession with a structured build-up and high pressing that looks to force a turnover in the opposition’s half. This has led to Ipswich maintaining a top position in the Championship with 72 points from 39 games, while Portsmouth are 21st with just 42 points from 40.
Adrian Segecic is Portsmouth’s biggest threat in terms of firepower, having scored five goals in his 32 Championship appearances, but Jack Clarke has scored 14 goals in 39 appearances and looks the biggest danger man for the Tractor Boys.
Tractor Boys could edge a close clash
Ipswich Town beat Portsmouth 2-1 at home in the Championship six months ago, with the previous three meetings split equally (W1, D1, L1).
Ipswich’s superior form, more attacking firepower and better cohesion makes them a good bet to get all three points from this clash with odds of 9/10. The Tractor Boys have been solid on the road in the Championship this season, winning one and drawing the other in their last two away matches, while Portsmouth haven’t won their last home match against the Tractor Boys, and have drawn their last two matches overall. McKenna’s style should outplay the more pragmatic approach of Pompey’s boss, as the Tractor Boy’s structured build-up, possession dominance and high-tempo pressing should be too much for Portsmouth’s disciplined, but less dynamic style.
