Lively encounter likely when contrasting styles meet
Portsmouth and Leicester City shared the points in a 1-1 draw at Fratton Park five months ago.
Pompey boss John Mousinho, who has instilled a fluid, pressing style at Portsmouth since taking over in January 2023, has seen his side go from bad to worse since the turn of the year.
Pompey’s 2-2 draw at home to Oxford United was a game of two halves in which they showed grit.
They have also won 1-0 at Middlesbrough and failed to win in either of their previous two home games (drawing once and losing once), but they have plenty of attacking threat in a side that plays a hybrid 4-2-3-1/4-3-3 system.
The Pompey boss has got his team to play with the ball well and press when they don’t have it, making a habit of pushing their defensive line high up the pitch in a game that is often dominated by a pressing style that allows players to release into space. Leicester City will be well aware of the threat that Pompey can cause and will do their best to control the game, but the hosts will look to disrupt their rhythm.
Foxes may not have enough to win at Fratton
Gary Rowett, who took over at the King Power Stadium in February 2026, has had a tough gig since his appointment, with tactical instability and off-field issues dogging Leicester City’s season. They have been poor away from home this season and have failed to beat Portsmouth in their previous Championship meeting.
The Foxes have drawn both of their last two away matches and look likely to do the same here. Their 1-1 away draw at Sheffield Wednesday was followed by a 0-1 home defeat to Swansea City and they could be in trouble again against a Portsmouth side that will fancy their chances of getting something from Saturday’s contest.
The draw is our preferred play in the full-time market, but we also like the look of the over 2.5 goals bet at 1/1 and both teams to score at 77/100. Pompey will press Leicester, who like to dominate the ball and create central overloads, and it should lead to an open, back-and-forth contest.
Jordan James, who has scored 10 times in 30 league games, is Leicester’s only real focal point and Pompey have plenty of runners that can get in behind his defenders. An open game is highly likely with Portsmouth creating more of a threat on the counterattack than Leicester, who will look to play through Pompey’s press in a way that will be tough for them to achieve.
