Vallecanos and Alsatians set to make history
Rayo Vallecano will meet Racing Club Strasbourg in the UEFA Conference League for the first time when two relatively unknown clubs from Spain and France go head-to-head for the biggest night of their European histories on Thursday. The Spanish side are the slight favourites with the bookmakers to reach the UECL 2025-2026 final at 13/10, compared to 47/20 for the visitors and 237/100 for the draw, but it is the home team who will be happier to be at home.
Iñigo Pérez’s side have earned plenty of plaudits in Europe for their bold playing style, which has brought them to the semi-finals of the Conference League for the first time. The home ground advantage of Vallecas has been a key factor in their run to the last four with back-to-back 1-0 victories being supplemented by a gritty aggregate win over AEK Athens in the previous round. Rayo are inconsistent, but they are consistent at home; across competitions a 3-3 draw at Real Sociedad, 1-0 home win over Espanyol, 3-1 defeat at AEK and 3-0 defeat to Mallorca were followed by a 1-0 win at Elche.
Strasbourg have been even more patchy in the last five, starting with a 3-2 away win at Lorient, 2-0 cup defeat to Nice, 3-0 home defeat to Rennes, 4-0 UECL thrashing of Mainz and 2-0 defeat to Mainz in the reverse fixture. Gary O’Neil has impressed since taking charge in January, navigating them through the knockout rounds and keeping them in the top half of the French top flight while striving for continental qualification.
Both teams to score looks likely
Strasbourg’s victory over Mainz was arguably the best performance of the competition to date with Julio Enciso scoring one and assisting two in a 4-0 rout of the Germans, but Rayo’s home form gives them the edge in the match result betting. Backing BTTS, however, looks a much better way to make money on this clash with the odds at 77/100 suggesting both teams will get on the scoresheet in what is likely to be an open affair.
Both clubs have had some great individual performances in this competition, but Rayo can boast the most consistent performer in Álvaro García. Sergio Camello is also a threat in behind and was on target in the recent win at Espanyol while Isi Palazón is the creative engine and provided the away goal at AEK.
Strasbourg are not short of quality or talent up front with Panichelli leading the way in Ligue 1 and posing an aerial threat. However, Sebastian Nanasi and Emmanuel Emegha are both capable of getting on the end of a transition ball - as Mainz found out to their cost - and both are capable of scoring goals.
Strasbourg can make a statement
The clash of styles could see Rayo’s pressing and overloading work come up against Strasbourg’s discipline while the visitors’ speed in transition could cause problems for Rayo’s high defensive line. Strasbourg also look dangerous and, given the nature of the tie, it is hard to see them being beaten by more than a goal.
The weather forecasts suggest it will be mild, dry and perfect for a high-paced game at Vallecas so take Strasbourg to score in a 2-2 draw that would set up a gripping second leg.
