Athlone are in form, Czarni are capable
There is plenty of goal and progress to suggest that Saturday's UEFA Women's Champions League (UWCL) First Qualifying Round Final could be a thrilling European scrap rather than a cagey drag-out. Athlone Town (W) and KKS Czarni Sosnowiec (W) have each arrived in form, giving both coaches reason to be positive about their teams' chances of progressing to the next stage.
Lily Agg's young charges have been in the title race in the SSE Airtricity Women's Premier Division all season, and after a solid start to her role in the top job, they are playing sharp, progressive football and holding their own on the European stage. Athlone's system is pragmatic and wide, which should suit them against a team that plays a more fluid game, but their best chances will come when they can stretch the game by either overloading the flanks, getting into aerial duels or hurting the opposition from set pieces.
Madie Gibson's ability to whip in crosses from deep is vital to their attacking rhythm, while the pace, movement and menace of Alexis Strickland and Roisin Molloy ensure that Athlone can create genuine danger when they get in behind. Dana Scheriff will be Athlone's main scoring threat and will be the finish to most of the good chances they create.
Stemplewski’s Czarni can really play
Sebastian Stemplewski's side play a similarly high-tempo game, but with a faster combination play in the final third and a more intense pressing game after turnovers. This makes Czarni more likely winners on the night as, while Czarni's home-city edge in Sosnowiec is considerable, Czarni's superior attacking quality gives them a chance to turn this into a game of their choice.
Czarni finished among the leading teams in the 2025/26 ORLEN Women's Ekstraliga, giving them real domestic pedigree coming into Europe this season. Stemplewski has a talented bunch of players to work with and they showed that in their 7-1 semi-final win over WFC Nike, where Oliwia Zgoda hit a brace and young Nikol Kaletka, who operates best from advanced areas, got on the scoresheet.
Czarni also have the attacking depth of Polish internationals such as Agnieszka Jędrzejewicz, the pace of Klaudia Miłek and an array of players who can come in and offer something different. Stemplewski has taken the gloves off his team here and, although Czarni are not the biggest of sides, they have a genuine edge in terms of the speed and quality of their play.
KKS are the better value and worth a small wager
The oddsmakers have this as a matchup with Czarni at 1.97 and Athlone at 3.06, while the draw, at 3.7, is perhaps too large. We'll take the value on offer for the Polish side here with a straight wager on Czarni, but it's unlikely to be a stroll for the visitors.
Athlone are in great form and they could easily keep this close into the dying moments of the game, but we're taking a Czarni win here, as Stemplewski's team have a bit more about them and it's worth taking on Agg's side.
A 2-1 away win fits the odds and the matchup best here, but the Czarni team are clearly capable of greater scores if the hosts slip up on the defensive side of the ball. Over 2.5 goals is our choice from the goals markets at 1.65.
