- Plymouth Argyle are in 4th place in League One 2026-2027 having taken 19 points from 11 games, while Cambridge United are also on 19 points from 10 fixtures in 5th.
- Plymouth have won 3, drawn 1 and lost 1 of their 5 away games in League One 2026-2027.
- Cambridge have won 3, drawn 1 and lost 1 of their 5 home games in League One 2026-2027, scoring 8 goals (1.60 per game).
The Pilgrims can edge a tricky test in Cambridge
Plymouth Argyle FC are very much up with the pace in League One 2026-2027 after taking 19 points from 11 matches, while Neil Harris' Cambridge United are on the same points tally from 10 fixtures.
This game therefore represents a head-to-head clash between two of the division's top teams at the Abbey Stadium this Saturday and it should be a fascinating encounter between two contrasting styles.
The hosts like to maintain a compact mid-block and hit teams on the counter, whereas the Pilgrims prefer to keep the ball and press teams in a coordinated manner. Tom Cleverley has been in charge of Plymouth since 13 June 2025 and his team have travelled well in the early stages of League One 2026-2027, winning three of their five away games in this campaign (W3, D1, L1).
Cambridge have also won four and drawn one of their last five, so this looks set to be an even contest that could go either way. But with Plymouth's recent away form and the odds on offer, the visitors are worth the favourites' tag at 143/100.
Home side are on a three-game winning streak
Cambridge are a solid 31/20, which is a bit rich for my taste, but the 47/20 available for the draw looks a lot more enticing. The U's have won their last three League One 2026-2027 games coming into this, but it's worth noting the two most recent results to make up that run.
A 1-0 home win over Blackpool was followed by a 2-1 success at Barnsley, but this will be a completely different test and I think the visitors will have the edge in what should be a close and tense affair.
An alternative angle could be to back both teams to score as Cambridge are in good form in front of goal at home, scoring eight times in five games, while Plymouth have conceded seven times in the same number of away fixtures and they are capable of giving the game away in the final third.
Plymouth have an extra spark up top
Ben Knight has been the spark for Cambridge this term with three goals in eight League One 2026-2027 appearances, but Plymouth have a more dangerous player up top in Aribim Pepple. The striker has two in his last five for the Pilgrims and his two goals have given the Pilgrims an extra bit of bite at the pointy end of the field.
The match result market is my preference for the main bet, but both teams to score could be a good punt on the side.
