- Sheffield United have better form (W3, D1, L1) and a better league position than Charlton (0W, 0D, 3L).
- Charlton have a better recent record against Sheffield United, winning the last two times these sides met in the Championship.
- Charlton have scored five goals in six home games, while Sheffield United have conceded eight on the road.
Blades look to be more in form
Sheffield United will be a bit the more likely winner when they travel to face Charlton Athletic at The Valley, but the Blades will have to find a way to get a result against a team that they have not beaten at the Addicks' home ground in their most recent away game.
Chris Wilder has kept the Blades system very fluid, able to switch between a back four or back three as the game demands and creating enough overloads to cause opponents problems from different angles. Wilder has been in charge of Sheffield United since 15 September 2025 and the club have made a big leap forward in the Championship 2026/2027 with him in charge.
Sheffield United currently occupy tenth spot with 19 points from their opening 13 games - four better off than Charlton who are 20th with 14. The Addicks will be desperate for a spark to get them going and the arrival of Nathan Jones on 4 February 2024 has certainly helped them to become a more direct unit that wins the ball and runs forward.
Jones is a direct coach
Charlton play a high-intensity game and will attempt to overrun the opposition with energy and directness. Jones has favoured a 4-2-3-1 system that builds from the back when they can, but transitions quickly when the ball is won. Tyreece Campbell is Charlton's biggest attacking threat with four goals in eight appearances in the Championship 2026/2027, but Sheffield United have Patrick Bamford with two goals in seven games, and he has three in his last five. The odds suggest Sheffield United are a shade too short at 61/50 favourites with Charlton 11/5 and the draw 5/2 in the outright market. The draw looks like the most likely outcome of this game, but the visitors are in much better form and do not have the better record against their hosts, so we'll side with the away win.
Close game expected at The Valley
These two teams have very different styles, but neither are going to allow too many chances in this kind of fixture. A tight, cagey clash is likely, but Charlton's home record (W2, D3, L1 from six games) and Sheffield United's away record (W2, D2, L2) are both mixed enough for us to focus on the better goals stats.
Sheffield United have scored eight goals in their last five, which is a big jump for a team that were lacking sharpness in the final third a month or so ago. That's why we're taking over 2.5 goals here at 22/25 rather than BTTS at 7/10, although both will more than likely land in an away win.
Sheffield United have beaten Bristol City 1-0 away, drawn 1-1 at home to Derby County and scraped past Wrexham 1-0 at home in their last three games. A similar scoreline looks good here with the visitors to win 1-0 as the main selection and a tight, tense game in prospect at The Valley.
