- Portsmouth and Sheffield United are both in the bottom half of the Championship 2026-2027 table.
- The Blades have three wins and a draw from the last four head-to-heads, but Pompey are still seeking their first win in that run.
- Sheffield United have lost two of their last three away games.
The Blades are slightly edged
Pompey will welcome The Blades to Fratton Park on Wednesday in a clash that could have all the ingredients for a messy affair. The hosts are unbeaten in their last two, but consecutive draws with Charlton Athletic and Blackburn Rovers indicate a club grinding rather than blowing teams away.
Sheffield United arrive off the back of a run of one win and four defeats in their last five, including losses to fellow strugglers Wolverhampton (home) and Stoke (away) in the Championship 2026-2027, and an EFL Cup slip-up at League One Fleetwood Town.
Chris Wilder has had a great impact since taking charge at Bramall Lane in September 2025 and his trademark 3-5-2/3-5-1-1 system is still humming along nicely. The overlapping centre-backs and wing-backs are designed to overload the wide areas, and they have the quality to build from deep and hit their advanced players.
The wide players are crucial to Pompey's system too, but John Mousinho has led the club since January 2023 and prefers a more possession-based approach with a 4-2-3-1 formation that can turn into a 3-2-5 in the final third.
The Pompey press high and should cause problems for the visitors, but they can get stretched if they're penetrated on the flanks.
Marko Milovanovic has been on fire for Portsmouth in their recent five-game run, notching two of their five goals, but he is a lone finisher and should get some help if The Blades' transitions are clicking again.
Patrick Bamford remains the focal point of Sheffield United's attacks, but he is not in vintage form with just two goals in seven Championship 2026-2027 games.
Pompey are scoring and conceding at home
These two teams are closely matched and the visitors' slight advantage in the betting reflects that, although The Blades are probably a little short at 17/10 with Pompey coming in at 7/5 and the draw at 12/5.
The home record of Portsmouth (one win, one draw and two defeats in four) suggests that Fratton Park hasn't been a fortress so far in the Championship 2026-2027, but they have scored 1.25 goals per game and conceded 1.75 on average. This could get messy.
Sheffield United have scored 1.25 and conceded 1.25 away, so they are more of a balanced road outfit and it's just about them. If Pompey can lock down the flanks and press successfully they can make it messy, but if The Blades break the press they should get chances on the counter-attack.
So, the double chance and both teams to score look more attractive angles on this game than the match winner, although we will lean towards the away side because of their better head-to-head record and Pompey's less than impressive record at home.
