An early-season test at the Northolme
Gainsborough Trinity will be keen to set the early-season tone and send out an opening day message that they mean business when they face a determined Workington AFC side in what should be a good opening fixture at the season's start on Saturday.
Trinity come into the 2026/27 campaign fresh off a solid seventh-placed finish in the Northern Premier League last term, which gives them a greater platform of confidence to push on for another strong season.
Workington finished the 2025/26 season, but their season was all about survival and the ability to bounce back after a poor run of results. They did just that in the last third of the season, including a 3-2 victory over Warrington Town, which was one of the best comebacks of the campaign.
Billy Barr's side will be out to prove that 2025/26 was no fluke by taking that late-season momentum into the 2026/27 fixtures and they'll fancy a scrap here.
Rivals have been evenly matched in recent times
The head-to-head record between these two sides has been tight in the modern era of this long-standing rivalry with Gainsborough holding the edge since 2006 by nine wins, seven draws and five defeats. Gainsborough Trinity came away from Lincolnshire with a 2-1 victory in October 2025 only to draw 3-3 in the return fixture in February 2026 and we don't see too much to separate them again this weekend.
The match betting prices reflect the head-to-head numbers with Trinity in at 47/50 ahead of the draw at 61/25 and Workington at 119/50, so we must look elsewhere to find the most profitable angle.

A scrappy affair with a home edge
Russ Wilcox's men have a compact 4-2-3-1 system and focus on structure, but there is bite to the game plan as Lewis Butroid is a real handful from the left flank, contributing goals, assists and set pieces from the wide areas.
Jonny Margetts and Frank Mulhern will provide an extra punch up top when the game does open up.
Workington will look to disrupt this.
Alex Mitchell is a solid last line of defence for the visitors and the back four around him has been strengthened so they'll be compact and nasty to break down. Dan Hopper and Steven Rigg finished as their top scorers with six goals apiece last season and offer a finishing edge.
We still think the most likely scenario will be a home win, but there is little between these sides in recent history and we're going to have a bit of a punt on a 2-1 result with a tight, tense draw also in the cards as the sharpest scoreline. The set pieces and second balls will probably play a big part in how this goes and we're siding with the home side because they will want it more.
