Tight, tense affair expected in opener at Harrison Park
Leek Town and Whitby Town meet in the opening fixture of the 2026 - 27 Northern Premier League campaign and it could be a tight and tense encounter. Leek are the slight favourites at 1/1 to open the season with a win, but Whitby, at 53/25, will be no easy beats and neither will the draw at 51/20.
Leek had a solid, if unspectacular, season in 2025 - 26, finishing around mid-table after compiling around 17 wins, seven draws and 16 losses. That gives Josh Brehaut's side a good baseline to build on this time around and, although pre-season results don't count for much, they have also produced five straight friendly results that include four draws and one narrow defeat.
Brehaut has set up his team as a disciplined, coach's side with a compact shape that will stop opponents scoring by staying in shape and then hit them on the counter or at set pieces. The Blues have a few players who provide bite up top and goalie Dino Visser has been an unsung hero for a few years now, pulling off big saves and keeping plenty of clean sheets.
Both teams to score looks good
Leek's pre-season form suggests the Blues will not be easy to break down and the only way to break them down might be to press them high up the pitch. And that's where Lee Bullock and Jason Kennedy have set up Whitby, with the Cod Army playing on the front foot and using their width, tempo and forward runners to get at teams.
Matthew Tymon remains one of Whitby's most dangerous players and can punish any lapse in shape, so the BTTS-Yes play at 33/50 looks good for this fixture. Under 2.5 goals at 89/100 is also a fit because this looks like a press vs structure kind of game that could be tight in the first half at least.
This looks a lot like a Leek lean to me because of the home advantage and the head-to-head record, but Whitby's pre-season showing has been mixed with a 5-0 win at Marske United overshadowed by defeats to West Auckland Town and Northallerton either side of a draw with Bridlington Town. It's going to be a close game, but I don't think the home side will have it all their own way.
