Lions can pounce on Town
A sunny and dry weekend is set to be perfect for open football on Saturday but whether Guiseley can make Town play that way may be the key to this opener. The Wire are more likely to sit deep and play with a compact, balanced and counter-attacking approach.
Paul Carden has added a little more structure to the middle and back of his side for 2026-27, while maintaining some continuity in the spine of his 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 set-up. Reece Daly remains his most likely forward target, but the additions of Jack Goodwin, Ewan Bange and Joe Rodwell-Grant have enhanced his forward options.
And in Liam Isherwood, Town have a reliable man to stop the rot if they are pinned back for long periods by a Guiseley side, which could well be the way this opener goes. Ian Richards has added plenty of life and front-foot to his Lions' build-up with a couple of smart additions that have made their mark in the recent pre-season matches.
Ollie Brown has made a big impact, earning plaudits from the fans and fellow young players alike, while the continuity provided by Cam Wilson and Adam Lund also give the Guiseley boss plenty of options. The Lion's main man last season was Jordan Thewlis who found the net 17 times in 41 league appearances, making him an obvious bet to be the goal threat in the penalty box this time around.
Set-piece punch could open up Town
Guiseley finished in the same mid-table pack as Town last term and the continuity that Richards has maintained while improving the squad remains. A recent pre-season run of four wins and one defeat has made the Lion's odds-on favourites for this season opener, but we cannot pass on the chance of backing the visitors to make them work hard for it at 78/25. Because Town did beat Guiseley 2-0 in the league back in October 2025 and the fact that the 2026-27 Northern Premier League Premier Division season has not yet started, these two clubs are on level points with a lot of time to make their mark on the table. Guiseley's most recent league meeting at Nethermoor Park was a 4-0 statement of intent in February of that year and gives the hosts a huge psychological advantage. The under 2.5 line is only slightly shorter at 3/4 than the over 2.5 line at 47/50, so this is likely to be a tight opener rather than a goal-fest and the likeliest outcomes in the live markets are either a narrow win for the hosts or an all-square 1-1 result.
