Stockton are the sharp shooters
Stockton Town are likely to win Saturday's Northern Premier League 2026-27 curtain-raiser at Ilkeston FC, but the short odds on the visitors makes it hard to recommend an away stake in the win market.
Michael Dunwell's men finished fifth in the 2025-26 NPL Premier Division season with 63 points while Ilkeston Town finished 11th with 52. Stockton have the better momentum going into this opener after making a serious play-off push last season and playing some good pre-season games.
The Blue Boys scored heavily in their July friendlies, including a 6-1 win over Seaton Carew, and there is enough in their squad to suggest they can take this fixture. Kevin Hayes was their main man with double-figure scoring last season, but Josh Scott and Jonathan Petitjean add another dimension up front for Dunwell and make them more than a one-man band.
Routine win for Town not expected
The odds of 77/50 look a bit tight on the away side and Ilkeston are just behind them in the market at 7/5, which is a little surprising. The draw at 23/10 looks a little short for what is essentially a coin-toss game between two sides in transition.
An under 2.5 goals wager at 3/4 is probably the best value bet for this clash between two teams who will probably want to establish an early identity. Stockton are drilled by Dunwell to play a compact, mid-block style of football and are very dangerous from wide areas and on set pieces.
In contrast, Tris Whitman and Aaron Large are stamping their own identity on Ilkeston with a vertical style of play that should see them attack with more directness, press in phases and run off the shoulder more.
Hayes to make the difference
Dylan Reason has shown some of his pre-season pace and power already and Anthony Dwyer is the headline summer recruit at the front end, where his ability to hold the ball up and provide a focal point should be a big improvement on last term.
Steven Johnson-Fikula is another arrival who should add to Ilkeston's defensive strength and work rate while the new project is taking shape.
But Hayes will always be the main threat for the visitors and he can nick this one if the game is tight, as they did in the 1-0 away win on 14 March 2026. Both teams to score - no is 47/50 looks a decent bet for this to be a tight and tense contest which the sharper away side can nick.
