- Team form: Portsmouth have failed to win either of their last two home games against The Blades.
- Recent form: Portsmouth are unbeaten in their last two, but consecutive draws with Charlton Athletic and Blackburn Rovers suggest they're grinding out results rather than destroying teams.
- Away form: Sheffield United have lost two of their last three away games, so their road form is a little shaky.
Pompey and The Blades to share the points
Tactical approaches
Pompey host The Blades in a true clash of styles at Fratton Park on Wednesday and it could come down to who wins the pressing duel in determining which team ends up with the advantage. John Mousinho has been in charge of Pompey since January 2023 and his best results have come from pressing the opposition high and wide with a 4-2-3-1 shape that can morph into a 3-2-5 when in possession.
Chris Wilder's Blades are also a possession-based side, but they are more patient and build from the back with the 3-5-2/3-5-1-1 system that has been his trademark since taking charge in September 2025. His overlapping centre-backs and wing-backs can create overloads wide and they can create plenty of vertical attacks from deep if they are able to break the press.
Key player
Marko Milovanovic has been Portsmouth's main man in their last 5-game run with two goals in five games. He's scored two of Pompey's five goals in total.
Wilder’s men still have the edge in head-to-head match
The statistics and head-to-head suggest an away win is the way to go, but the odds of 2.7 for The Blades are a little too short for our taste, especially considering Pompey are 2.4 and the tie is 3.4. This has all the makings of a close game, but Sheffield United have the better away record and Portsmouth's home record is not great.
- The headline stats show The Blades have the advantage in the head-to-head with three wins and a draw from the last four meetings and Pompey are still looking for their first ever victory against them.
- However, seven months ago in the Championship 2025/2026, United claimed a 1-0 victory away from home and Pompey have failed to win either of their last two home games against them.
- Pompey have won just one of their four home games, drawing once and losing twice, so that doesn't suggest a solid fortress has been constructed at Fratton Park in 2026/27.
Blades’ away form is better than United’s home form
In the Championship 2026/2027, Pompey are 19th with eight points from seven games, one place and one point behind The Blades who have nine points from eight games. But Pompey's record of one win, one draw and two defeats from four home matches isn't too bad when compared to the visitors' one win, two draws and one defeat in four away trips.
The away form looks slightly better than the home form for Sheffield United and they are more likely to be the team to end this streak of close contests with a win. If Portsmouth can lock down the flanks, which they can do at times, this game could be messy.
But if The Blades are able to escape the press they should get enough chances to win, particularly with Patrick Bamford to aim for up top again. Bamford has two goals in seven Championship 2026/2027 games, but they tend to come in clusters and he could fire The Blades back to life on Wednesday.
A safer wager may be to go for both teams to score in this fixture as Portsmouth's open games at home have an average of 1.25 goals scored and 1.75 conceded while United are the more balanced side on the road with 1.25 goals scored and 1.25 conceded.
