San Jose have the better all-round team
Earthquakes are a more polished and efficient outfit than Los Angeles Galaxy this season and Bruce
Arena's men look the more likely to make the most of any of their chances in Sunday's
California Clasico at Stanford Stadium.
The San Jose record of 10 wins, two draws and three defeats is a much
better return than LA Galaxy's 5-5-6 log and, although the Earthquakes have
failed to follow up in four of their last five matches, their floor has been
pretty high.
Earthquakes' last result was the 0-2 US Open Cup defeat to Colorado
Rapids while they did beat Portland Timbers 3-1 in their last MLS 2026
matchup, so the ceiling is high for them too.
Pace of play will be key to outcome
Greg Vanney's Galaxy have been all over the place since he took over as coach on 2 December 2020, but it is a possession-based 4-3-3 system that he prefers to play. LA can push up to a 4-2-3-1 when they have the ball and pull back to a 4-5-1 when they are out of possession, so it is a versatile system that can create overloads and exploit defenders in numbers.
A lot will depend on which team controls the tempo of this clash, which is a classic clash of styles between San Jose's pressing and counter-attacking game and LA's patient ball work.
If San Jose win the ball back quickly, the game should be opened up and if the Galaxy are able to control it, it could be a chess match in which the side's superior organisation will probably count for more.
Quakes can make their mark
Last season's 1-1 draw in MLS 2025 would be an optimistic outcome for the Galaxy in this one with the last three head-to-head meetings all finely balanced at one win apiece and a draw.
The odds of 33/50 on the team are a little short, however, with the Galaxy available at 333/100 and the draw at 16/5, which suggests there is still a role for the match result markets.
San Jose are the odds-on favourites to win, but we feel Los Angeles can make a mark, so we are taking the Draw no bet option to insure us against the game ending all square.
Over 2.5 goals at 43/100 and both teams to score at 49/100 are good bets given the quality of San Jose's attack and LA's defensive record of 25 goals conceded at 1.56 per game compared to San Jose's 15 at 1.00.
