- Southampton have won their last five games in a row.
- Bristol City have won two, drawn two and lost one of their last five.
St Mary’s a fortress for Saints
Southampton’s red-hot form should see them maintain their promotion push when they entertain Bristol City in the Championship on Tuesday.
Saints have won each of their last five matches, beating Wrexham 5-1 away, Derby County 2-1 at home and then comfortably seeing off Blackburn Rovers 3-0 at St Mary’s. Tonda Eckert’s side are fourth in the Championship table with 72 points from 42 matches and are sitting pretty in the promotion places.
Bristol City are 10th with 58 points after the same number of games and have had a solid rather than spectacular campaign. Roy Hodgson returned to Bristol City as head coach in March of 2026, 44 years after his first spell as Robins boss, but has yet to stamp his authority on the squad.
The Robins have won two, drawn two and lost one of their last five, beating Sheffield United 1-0 at home before drawing 0-0 away to QPR. They have won eight, drawn six and lost seven of their 21 Championship away games.
Bristol City have been solid rather than spectacular
Hodgson has brought a new structure and solidity to the Robins after the previous regime favoured a more high-pressing, direct approach. The midfield engine and defensive line remain disciplined, but Scott Twine has provided the spark up front with 11 goals in 41 appearances in the Championship - often when his side have needed it.
Bristol City are unbeaten in their last three away (W1, D2) and have only conceded 24 goals in the Championship away from home - an average of 1.14 goals per game. Southampton average 1.62 goals per home game, having scored 34 times at St Mary’s in the Championship.
Saints are very strong at home, winning their last four and not drawing or losing a single match there. Adam Armstrong leads the scoring charts for Eckert’s men with 11 goals in 29 Championship appearances and should provide the constant threat at the top end of the pitch.
Stick with Southampton for the win
Saints are full of confidence and have been winning matches in a variety of different ways over the last few weeks, which is testament to their depth and the quality of Eckert’s coaching. Eckert has made them a side that likes to take the game to their opponents, pressing high, overloading wings and controlling possession.
Bristol City are a solid side, but are in a period of transition with a relatively new manager and Southampton should have the quality to put them to the sword.
This game will be won or lost in the wings and transition moments, and with promotion on the line, we’re backing Southampton to take all three points at 16/25 in a game in which Bristol City have the upper hand in the head-to-head, having won two of the last three meetings between the sides.
