Southampton have found their groove
Recent form
Southampton have finally found their rhythm under Tonda Eckert, who took charge in November 2025, and it has been a breath of fresh air for the Saints fans. His team have won their last five in a row, scoring freely while conceding very little.
The 5-1 away win at Wrexham was followed by a 2-1 home victory against Derby County, but the 3-0 blowout of Blackburn Rovers at St Mary’s was the most convincing. Armstrong was on form, as usual, but the fact that Southampton controlled the game and turned it on when they wanted to was even more impressive.
Tactics and standings
Southampton are now fourth in the Championship standings with 72 points from 42 games, firmly in the playoff places and with an opportunity to push for automatic promotion. Eckert has instilled his own ideas on the team, pressing high, flooding the wings and dictating possession, which has seen them rack up five consecutive wins.
Bristol City are in transition
Bristol City are in 10th place in the Championship after picking up 58 points from 42 fixtures - a solid but unspectacular campaign. Under the experienced and historic leadership of Roy Hodgson, who returned to the Robins after 44 years in March 2026, the team have become more organised and much more solid at the back, but at the expense of some of the characteristics that made the 2024-25 side so thrilling to watch.
Hodgson has added structure to a team that were previously a high-pressing, high-energy outfit and has simplified the patterns they play, taking much of the risk out of their play. They beat Sheffield United 1-0 at home last time out and earned a solid 0-0 draw at QPR in their previous away match, but the Robins have been in transition all season.
Scott Twine has 11 goals in 41 Championship games this campaign for Bristol City and often comes up with the goods when his side need a big performance.
Saints should have enough to see off the visitors
With promotion in the offing, Southampton should have the quality and energy to get the better of a Bristol City side who are in a period of transition.
Armstrong is a key difference-maker for the home team and, although Twine is also in fine form, Southampton should have too much quality all over the pitch for the visitors.
Backing the Saints to win at 1.64 is the way to go here. The home side have scored 34 goals in 21 home Championship games, an average of 1.62 per game, but with the way they have been playing in the last few weeks, they could run up the score against a Bristol City team that is solid but uninspiring.
